links, leaving a mining reserve between the said
river and the south-west boundary of the said area;
thence due north, five thousand four hundred and
fifty-four (5454) links; thence due east to the
starting point, five thousand seven hundred and
seventy-seven and a half (5777½) links: be the afore-
said linkages more or less.

All that area in the Provincial District of Otago,
containing by admeasurement one thousand three
hundred and ninety-seven (1,397) acres two (2) roods,
more or less, a portion of Run numbered 238,
situate in the Tarras Survey District, and being
Sections numbered from 1 to 7 inclusive, Block
III., on the map of the said survey district,
together with all roads intersecting the said area.
Boundary lines as follow: Commencing at a point
bearing on Trig. G, 194° 12′, and distant therefrom
one thousand four hundred and eighty-five (1485)
links; thence due east, six thousand six hundred and
fifty and a half (6650½) links; thence due north,
twenty-one thousand and forty-seven (21047) links;
thence in a westerly and thereafter southerly direc-
tion along the eastern bank of the Clutha River,
thirty thousand eight hundred (30800) links, leaving
a mining reserve of about two (2) chains in width
between the said river and the said block; thence
due east, one thousand and fifty-five (1055) links to
the starting point: be the aforesaid linkages more or
less.

Given under the hand of His Excellency the
Most Honorable George Augustus Con-
stantine, Marquis of Normanby, Earl
of Mulgrave, Viscount Normanby, and
Baron Mulgrave of Mulgrave, all in the
County of York, in the Peerage of the
United Kingdom; and Baron Mulgrave
of New Ross, in the County of Wexford,
in the Peerage of Ireland; a Member of
Her Majesty's Most Honorable Privy
Council; Knight Grand Cross of the Most
Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and
Saint George; Governor and Commander-
in-Chief in and over Her Majesty's Colony
of New Zealand and its Dependencies,
and Vice Admiral of the same; and issued
under the Seal of the said Colony, at the
Government House, at Wellington, this
eleventh day of February, in the year of
our Lord one thousand eight hundred
and seventy-eight.

"The Protection of Animals Act, 1873."

A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS by section ten of "The Protection of
Animals Act, 1873," it is enacted that no game
shall be hunted, shot, taken or killed in any province
until the same shall have been proclaimed as open
for that purpose by a Proclamation in that behalf to
be made and published in the Gazette; and that no
game shall be hunted, shot, taken, or killed except
within a consecutive period not exceeding three
months of any year to be fixed by the Superinten-
dent by Proclamation as aforesaid, between the first
day of May and the thirty-first day of July, both in-
clusive, in any year, and only between the hours of
sunrise and sunset: And whereas by "The Abolition
of Provinces Act, 1875," it is enacted that all powers,
duties, and functions which immediately before the
date of the abolition thereunder of any province were
vested in or to be exercised or performed by the

Superintendent of such abolished province should, on
the day of the date of the abolition of such province,
and for the purposes of the district included within
such abolished province, vest in and be exercised and
performed by the Governor:

Now, therefore, I, George Augustus Constantine,
Marquis of Normanby, Governor of New Zealand, in
exercise of the powers and authorities conferred on
me by the said recited Acts, and in exercise of any
other power enabling me in that behalf, do hereby
proclaim and declare that hares shall be open to be
coursed within the Provincial District of Canterbury
between the first day of May, one thousand eight
hundred and seventy-eight, and the thirty-first day
of July in the same year, both inclusive, but only
between the hours of sunrise and sunset.

Given under the hand of His Excellency the

Establishment of Local District and Land Officer at
Patea.

A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS by the twenty-fouth section of "The
Land Act, 1877," it is enacted that the
Governor, by Proclamation in the Gazette, may from
time to time establish and define, abolish, alter, or
reconstitute local districts for the sale or disposal of
land, and in like manner may from time to time
appoint Land Officers or other persons for conducting
sales of land in such local districts, and for receiving
applications for the sale, letting, disposal, or occupa-
tion of Crown lands, and for generally carrying into
effect the provisions of the said Act:

Now, therefore, I, George Augustus Constantine,
Marquis of Normanby, the Governor of the Colony
of New Zealand, do hereby proclaim and declare that
the district described in the First Schedule hereto is
established, defined, and constituted a local district
for the sale and disposal of land under the said Act;
and that the Land Office the name of which is in the
said Schedule set opposite the name of the said local
district is appointed the Land Office for the said
local district; and that the person named in the Second
Schedule hereto is appointed the Land Officer for
conducting sales of land in such local district, and for
receiving applications for the sale, letting, disposal,
or occupation of Crown land, and for generally carry-
ing into effect the provisions of the said Act in and
for the district the name of which is in the said
Second Schedule set opposite the name of such
person.
