Diseases of the Respiratory Organs. There were 19 deaths from Bronchitis, Pneumonia, Pleurisy, and Congestion of the
Lungs. In August, 13 deaths took place from similar causes. Out of the 19 cases for last month, 7 deaths occurred at Dunedin.
Violent Deaths. Three were accidental. One adult male was run over by a cab, another was drowned by falling from a
wharf, and an infant was killed by suffocation. A woman committed suicide by wounding herself in the abdomen while in a state
of unsound mind. The total of violent deaths is thus 4.
Comparison with September, 1876.--The total number of deaths for September, 1876, was 93, or 4 less than the total for last
month. At Christchurch and Dunedin, the number of deaths for September of both years was the same. At Auckland, there
were only 9 deaths last month, against 18 in September, 1876; and at Wellington, on the other hand, 23 deaths were recorded,
against 17 in September of the previous year. Zymotic Diseases, which caused 20 deaths in the boroughs in September, 1877,
caused 16 in September, 1876. For both periods Scarlatina was the only epidemic disease. Against 18 deaths registered from
diseases of the Respiratory Organs in September, 1877, there were 20 in September, 1876. The Violent Deaths decreased from
7 in September, 1876, to 4 in September, 1877.
