The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases.
The estimates of the population are calculated on the number of inhabited houses in each borough, as shown in returns
supplied by the municipal authorities.

The births were 19 fewer than in August.
The deaths were 13 more in number than the deaths in August.
Of the deaths, males contributed 54; females, 43: 43 of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 44.33
per cent. of the whole number; 19 of these were of children under 1 year of age.

There were 6 deaths of persons of 65 years of age and over: 3 of these persons were males, and 3 females; 1 female of
74 died at Wellington; 2 males of 66 and 68 and 1 female of 69 at Nelson; 1 male of 70 and 1 female of 69 at Dunedin.

THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 years of age and 5 years and upwards, and
the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each cause in the Boroughs named, and that were registered, during the Month of
September, 1877.

ORDER 4.—Suicide.—Wound in Abdomen, 1.

Comparison with the previous Month.—The death rates for 5 boroughs were slightly higher for September than for August,
but at Auckland and Hokitika they were lower.
Zymotic Diseases.—The deaths from this class of disease exceeded those for the previous month by 5, and were 20.61 per
cent. of the whole number. More than half the deaths were from scarlatina, which complaint was fatal at the same towns as in
August. At Dunedin it caused 3 deaths, and at Hokitika the 8 deaths which represent the mortality for the month were all the
result of scarlatina. During the 8 months, February to September inclusive, there have been 40 deaths from this disease
registered as at Hokitika, out of a total mortality of 78 from all causes.
