NOTES FOR JANUARY, 1877.

Mongonui. Fine weather, small rainfall; maximum recorded on 2nd, 85 in.; strong N.E. winds on 14th, 15th, and 16th, and from S.W.
on 19th; winds prevailed from West.

Auckland. Stormy, wet, and unsettled; S.W. and N.E. winds prevailed; strong gale on 16th from N.E., doing damage in harbour, and
25th, S. W.; maximum rain registered on 17th, 1.83 in.; on 24th, hurricane reported passing over Hamilton (Waikato).

Taranaki. Fine to 13th, remainder of month wet and unsettled; prevailing westerly winds; gale on 24th; maximum rain recorded on
15th, 1.11 in.

Napier. Fine, with occasional showers, very small rainfall, the maximum, 39 in., recorded on 18th; winds prevailed from N.E. and
westerly, often high; S.W. gale on 24th and 25th.

Wellington. Fine bright warm weather up to the 14th, when the barometer fell, wind S.W., and heavy rain during afternoon, 1.00 in.
recorded on 15th, the maximum for the month, barometer 29-288; on night of 16th, dull and oppressive, with thunder, lightning, and
rain; squally weather generally during remainder of month, wind N.W.; strong gale during night of 16th; last four days bright
and pleasant, though fresh N.W. breeze.

Wanganui. Fine up to 13th; remainder of month very showery and stormy from N.W.; maximum rain recorded on 18th, 86 in.; thunder
on 16th and 23rd; prevailing N.W. and W. winds for month.

Nelson.-Fine weather throughout, but strong winds, chiefly from S.W.; winds also from N. and N.E. frequent; thunder on 17th; maxi-
mum rain recorded on 15th, 78 in.

Cape Campbell.-Dry weather, with strong breezes and heavy gales, chiefly from S.E. and N.W.; dull during latter part of month;
maximum rain recorded on 15th, 45 in.

Christchurch. Fine early part; on 10th severe thunderstorm from S.E., with rain at night; showery during middle of month; wind S.W.
generally; from 22nd to end fine, but at times very oppressive; maximum rain recorded on 15th, 1.51 in.; prevailing winds N.E. and
S.W.

Bealey. Dull, showery, and unpleasant, particularly during latter part of month; an occasional fine day; maximum rain recorded on 27th,
1.88 in.; thunderstorms on 16th, 23rd, and 26th, that on 23rd lasting from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., very violent, with vivid lightning,
interrupted telegraph, and damaged poles; gales on 9 days; prevailing winds N. and N.W., and generally strong.

Hokitika. A few fine days early part of month, but otherwise very wet and unpleasant, with strong westerly winds, especially on 4th, 9th,
and 21st; thunder on 2nd; six days of fog; maximum rain recorded on 28th, 1.50 inch.

Dunedin.-Showery and very changeable; severe gale on 23rd from W., with rain; also on 24th and 25th from same quarter. Thick fogs
from 15th to 18th; prevailing wind S.W.; maximum rain recorded on 10th, 1.01 inch.

Queenstown.-Fine up to 6th; on 7th, thunderstorm, and unsettled for four days; from 11th to 21st dull and close; from 22nd to end of
month, cold and stormy; prevailing N.W. winds, and often strong; maximum rain recorded on 8th, 66 inch; snow fell on hills on
five days.

Southland. A stormy, wet month, with much hail and thunder; a few very hot days; wind chiefly from westward; six days of thunder,
and six of hail; maximum rain registered on 24th, 97 inch.

GENERAL REMARKS.

Wet, stormy, and unpleasant weather generally experienced throughout; wind prevailing from westward, and frequent thunder-
storms. Earthquake reported by observer at Wellington on 10th, at 9.58 p.m., sharp, from S.E.
