THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.
Deaths from Zymotic Diseases were less in June than previously throughout the year. The deaths from diarrhea, so
numerous in the early portion of the year, have fallen to 5.
As last month, the cases of Diphtheria were confined to Dunedin (2), Christchurch (2), and the Thames (1).
The Deaths from Constitutional Diseases have considerably increased in June; the deaths from Phthisis alone having reached
the comparatively large number of 16. In each Borough, except Nelson, one or more deaths occurred from this cause. The
largest number was 7, in Wellington.
The Deaths from local diseases have also increased in June. The chief difference appears to have been in diseases of the
Respiratory System, which have increased from 8 to 13.
Of the 5 deaths in Hokitika, 4 were of infants a few hours old, from Premature Birth; the other was a death from Phthisis.
The number of Violent Deaths was larger in June than during either of the three previous months. Of the 9 deaths of that
class, 6 occurred at Dunedin.
The accompanying Meteorological Report shows an extremely heavy rainfall in Wellington during June; the excess being
over 4 inches in excess of the rainfall in May, and nearly 3 inches in excess of the rainfall during June in previous years.
