N.B.—The Auckland and Hokitika Hospitals are outside the boundaries of the respective boroughs.
The numbers of the population must not be taken as absolutely correct, as the compilation from the schedules may cause a
slight alteration. The numbers given do not include the persons on board ship.
The number of births registered was less in May than previously during the year. The highest number was 292 in February.
The smallest previous number was 238 in March.
Of the total deaths, males contributed 47; females, 46: 35 of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 37-35
of the whole number; 30 of these were of children under 1 year of age.
There is a noticeable reduction in the number of deaths of children under 5 years within the last two months. They
were, in January, 66; in February, 77; in March, 73; in April, 47 (including 2 Nelson deaths); in May, 35.
There were 6 cases of death of persons over 65 years of age, viz., 5 females in Auckland (aged respectively 66 years and
73 years; 2, 80 years; and 1, 89 years); and 1 male in Dunedin, 67 years of age.
THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 years of age and 5 years and upwards, and
the proportions per cent. of Deaths from each cause in the Boroughs named, and that were registered, during the month of
May, 1874.
