Notice to contain name of township.
2. In cases of Bills whereby it is intended to
apply for power for the compulsory taking of
lands or houses, such notices shall contain a
description of the land proposed to be taken,
together with the name of the Province, Town-
ship, or other territorial division in which the land
is situate, and the names of the owners and
occupiers of such lands or houses, and shall state
the time and place of deposit of the Plans of the
proposed work, and of the copies of the New
Zealand Gazette notice, respectively.

Cemeteries, gasworks, &c.
3. In cases of Bills respecting any burial-
ground, cemetery, or gasworks, the notices shall
set forth and specify the limits within which
such burial-ground, cemetery, or gasworks are
intended to be erected or made.

Notice of intention to divert water.
4. In all cases where it is proposed to divert
into any intended cut, canal, reservoir, aqueduct,
or navigation, or into any intended variation,
extension, or enlargement thereof respectively, any
water from any existing cut, canal, reservoir, aque-
duct, or navigation, whether directly or deriva-
tively, and whether under any agreement with the
proprietor thereof or otherwise, the notices shall
contain the name of every such existing cut,
canal, reservoir, aqueduct, or navigation, the water
supplying which will either directly or derivatively
flow or proceed into any such intended cut, canal,
reservoir, aqueduct, or navigation; or into any
intended variation, extension, or enlargement
thereof.

Publication of Notices.
5. Not less than thirty days before the com-
mencement of the Session in which it is proposed
to make application for a Bill, such notices shall
be published once at least in the Government
Gazette of the Colony; and for two successive
weeks in some newspaper published in the Pro-
vince, County, or District in which any land is
situate to which any such Bill shall refer; the
first publication to be not less than thirty days
before the commencement of the Session.

II.—INITIATION AND PROGRESS OF BILL THROUGH

THE HOUSE.

Initiation of Private Bill.
6. No Private Bill shall be initiated in this
House but upon a Petition first presented and
received, with a printed copy of the proposed Bill
annexed, and such Petition shall be signed by one
or more of the parties applying for the same.

Petition for Private Bill to set forth that due notice has been
published.
7. Every Petition for a Private Bill shall com-
mence by setting forth that not less than thirty
days before the commencement of that Session,
the public notice required by section 5 has been
duly given of the general objects of and the
intention to apply for such Bill, and shall con-
clude with a true statement of the general objects
of the Bill, and a prayer for leave to introduce
it: and the production of the numbers of the
Gazette and newspaper or newspapers containing
such notice shall be sufficient proof of such notice.

When Petition has been received.
8. When the House shall be satisfied that the
required conditions have been complied with, the
Bill will be ordered to be brought in.

When leave to bring in has been obtained.
9. Before a Private Bill shall be read a first
time, it shall be printed at the expense of the
parties applying for it, in the same form as Public
Bills, and a sufficient number of copies of it shall
be delivered to the Clerk for the use of the
House.

When read a first time.
10. When a Private Bill shall have been read a
first time, it shall be referred to a Select Com-
mittee, to be appointed on motion upon notice, and
such Committee shall require proof of the allega-
tions contained in the preamble.

Petitions against Private Bills.
11. Every Petition in opposition to a Private
Bill shall distinctly specify the grounds of such
opposition; and, if received, shall be referred to
the Select Committee on the Bill.

A Select Committee on Private Bill may hear Counsel, &c.
12. Every Select Committee on a Private Bill
may, in its discretion, hear Counsel if it be
desired, and may also take such oral or other
evidence as it may think requisite; and may
decide on matters in issue between the persons
conducting and opposing the Bill: after which,
the question shall be put from the Chair, "That
the Preamble has been proved." And if the
question pass in the negative, it shall be fatal to
the Bill, and the Committee shall report accord-
ingly; but if the question pass in the affirmative,
the several clauses of the Bill shall next be pro-
ceeded with, and the amendments, if any, carefully
noted for report to the House, care being taken
that no clause be inserted or amendment made
in the Bill which shall be foreign to the import of
the notices required to be given by the party or
parties applying for it.

When Select Committee have reported in favour of Private Bill.
13. When a Select Committee shall have re-
ported in favour of a Private Bill, such Bill shall
be proceeded with as in the case of Public Bills,
and a future day, subsequent to the distribution
of the printed report and evidence, shall be
appointed for the second reading.

Private Bills coming from Legislative Council.
14. Private Bills coming to this House from
the Legislative Council, if accompanied by printed
copies of the reports and proceedings of the Select
Committees to which they may have been referred,
shall be proceeded with in all respects as Public
Bills transmitted to this House for its concur-
rence.

Fees.
15. The scale of fees to be paid by parties pro-
moting Private Bills shall be as follows :-

On the first reading .. .. 5
On the second reading .. .. 10
On the third reading and passing .. 10
And any Bill shall be stopped by Mr. Speaker,
in any stage of its progress, if any fee then due is
unpaid: Provided that it shall be competent for
the Select Committee, if they think proper, to
reduce the scale of fees on any particular Bill.

Fees to be paid to credit of Consolidated Revenue.
16. All fees payable under these Standing
Orders shall be paid to the credit of the Consoli-
dated Revenue of the Colony; and a certificate of
