Trial Trip of the P., N.Z. and A. R. M. Company's
s.s. "Tararua."

General Post Office,
Wellington, 27th June, 1865.
THE following Report of the Trial Trip of the
Panama, New Zealand and Australian Royal
Mail Company's s.s. "Tararua," is published for
general information.
J. L. C. RICHARDSON,
Postmaster-General.

Auckland, 1st May, 1865
SIR, In compliance with your instructions, I have
surveyed the Panama, New Zealand and Australian
Company's new screw steamer "Tararua," as to her
fitness for the Mail service under Admiralty con-
tract, 1858, and beg to report that, on a trial of
speed at the measured mile on the 28th ultimo, she
attained a mean of 11.56 knots per hour, with coals
and ballast on board equivalent to a fair average
cargo, the weather at the time being most favorable.
With reference to the equipments and build of hull,
I consider that when the requirements specified in
the accompanying list* are complied with, the "Tara-
rua" will then be fit for the Mail Service under
contract before referred to, so far as could be ascer-
tained on a survey afloat, with coals and ballast on
board, and linings in place. For the information of
Government, I also enclose description of ship and
analysis of runs at the measured mile, taken by Mr.
Aylmer, the engineer-surveyor who assisted me in
the survey.
I remain, &c.,
R. JOHNSON,
Mail Agent and Inspector
of Mail Steamers.

Hon. the Postmaster-General.
