NOTICE OF HEARING.

Court of Claims,
Auckland, 5th September, 1857.

PURSUANT to the "The Land Claims Settlement Act, 1856," the Claims specified in the
Schedule will be investigated in open Court, at Mangonui, on Saturday, the
3rd day of October next, and following days, at which time and place such claimants and all
parties interested are required to attend, with their witnesses and the original deeds or docu-
ments relating to the respective claims.

Claimant. Where situated. Nature of Claim.
James Berghan Mangonui This was an Original Land Claim, No. 259 and 259a

to 259h. Commissioner Godfrey reported 12th May
1844 in favour of Claimant for 438 acres to be granted
at some other place. Governor Fitzroy on the 20th
May 1844 awarded Scrip 'to the amount of £1146,
which was not exercised. Grant subsequently order-
ed to be prepared on survey, but not yet issued. |

Thomas Phillips | Mangonui | This was an Original Land Claim, No. 279 and 279a
to 279f. Commissioner Godfrey reported 12th May
1844 in favour of Claimants for 279 acres to be
granted at some other place. Governor Fitzroy on
the 20th May 1844 awarded Scrip to the amount
of £757, which was not exercised. |
| Richard Matthews | Kaitaia | This was an Original Land Claim, No. 164. Commis-
sioner Godfrey reported 15th April 1843 in
favour of the Claimant for 718 acres; subsequently
amended award for 479 acres. Grant for 479
acres signed by Governor Fitzroy on 22nd October
1844, but subsequently cancelled and Scrip to the
amount of £1500 awarded by Governor Fitzroy 15th
July 1845, which was not exercised. |
| George Stephenson | Mangonui | This is a Claim for Land ceded by Nopera Panakareao
in compensation for the destruction of the Claimant's
vessel, for which Governor Hobson 2nd November
1842 promised redress. Governor Fitzroy offered
25th December 1844 Scrip for £500 in compensa-
tion, which was refused. Pre-emption Certificate
No. 245 then issued 6th November 1845 for 999
acres to the Claimant. Commissioner Matson reported
18th July 1848 that plans had not been sent in. Claim
disallowed accordingly 25th July 1848. Govern-
ment on 16th June 1851 promised favourable con-
sideration on payment of 5s. per acre under Gover-
nor Grey's Minute of 1847. |
| Samuel Hayward Ford | On the River Awanui | This was an Original Land Claim, No. 300e. Com-
missioner Godfrey reported 15th April 1853 in
favour of Claimant for 1900 acres; amended
award for 1357 acres with certain reservations.
Grant signed by Governor Fitzroy 19th July 1844
for 1357 acres, but cancelled in July 1845 when
Governor Fitzroy awarded Scrip for £1357 in ex-
change, which was not exercised. |
| James Kemp | Wangaroa | This was an Original Land Claim, No. 273c, d, e,
and h for 4000 acres: Commissioner Godfrey re-
ported 8th April 1843 in favour of Claimant for
2284 acres; amended award 6th September 1843
not to exceed with other Claims the maximum of
2560 acres. Executive Council on 14th September
1844 authorised Commissioner Fitzgerald to make
extended award. Commissioner Fitzgerald 26th Sep-
tember 1844 recommended Grants to Claimant for
2276 acres. Grants ordered to be prepared by Go-
vernor Fitzroy accordingly, and issued for 5276
acres; the issue of a Grant for the Wangaroa
claim refused by Governor Grey in 1846 and 1847. |
| Rose Ann Cleghorn | Wairaka, Wangaroa | This was part of an Original Land Claim of W.
Powditch in Nos. 196 and 196a to b. Commissioner
Godfrey 8th April 1843 recommended no Grant,
Claimant not having paid fees. Derivative
Claim now admitted under the Act. |
| W. D. Snowden | Kaimanga, Wangaroa | This was part of an Original Land Claim of W.
Powditch in Nos. 196 and 196a and b. Commis-
sioner Godfrey 8th April 1843 recommended no
Grant, Claimant not having paid fees. Deriva-
tive Claim now admitted under the Act. |
| Church Mission Society | Kaitaia | This was an Original Land Claim, No. 299q. Com-
missioner Godfrey 23rd March 1843 reported in
favour of the Society for 1273 acres. Further
Special Report of Commissioners Godfrey and
Richmond 29th May 1843 on the whole of the So-
ciety's claims, not acted on as regards this claim. |
