✨ Land Compensation Claims
Land Commissioner’s Office,
Auckland, March 17th, 1848.
HENRY MATSON, a Commissioner appointed for examining and reporting on all Claims to Compensation preferred according to the provision of an Ordinance, Session 7, No. 22, intituled “An Ordinance to authorise Compensation in Colonial Debentures, to be made to certain Claimants to Land in the Colony of New Zealand,” do hereby notify that I will investigate the undermentioned claims at the Council Chamber on Monday, 3rd April, 1848, at Ten o’clock in the forenoon, and the investigation will be continued until the 22nd April.
The cases will be heard in the order in which they stand in the following list, and all parties are hereby summoned to be in attendance with their documents and witnesses, original deeds, (and translations thereof, if in the Maori language,) relating to their claims, with copies of the same, the latter to remain with the Commissioner.
Claimants are also hereby informed that if they do not by themselves, or an authorised agent, exhibit evidence in support of their claims to the Commissioner, at the above mentioned place, during the period stated, the said claims will be reported upon, and no grants recommended.

Cases:
Case No. 65 — Pre-emption certificate, No. 94
Adam Chisholm.
1200 acres. One thousand two hundred acres of land, situated at Okahu-kura, or Lucas Creek, on the east side, commencing at a place called Teanakotoraru on the Waitemata river, ascending the ridge of Kiriahura till it reaches the source of Kiriahura, or Hellyer’s creek, running thence along the ridge till it joins the source of the Otahu creek, through the said creek to Okahu-kura, or Lucas’s creek, till it joins land being purchased by Mr. Langford, following the boundaries of Mr. Langford’s land, until it again joins Lucas’s creek, embracing the whole of Hellyer’s creek, and following the windings of the same until it reaches Te Tikoro, whence it continues to wind its course along the Waitemata river, joining the Anakorua.
Alleged to have been purchased from the native chief, Hauraki.
Consideration — 1 horse, 2 saddles, 2 bridles, 1 brush, 1 comb, £2 cash.
Case No. 66 — Pre-emption certificate, No. 92
Robert White and George Willson.
1000 acres. One thousand acres of land situated between the head of the Waitemata river and Kaipara, bounded at the front by the natives dragging place, one side by the Kaipara creek, at the back by native land, and on the other side by the Kaipara road.
Alleged to have been purchased from the native chiefs Taraia, Huki and others.
Case No. 67 — Pre-emption certificate, No. 170
Robert White and George Willson.
1000 acres. One thousand acres of land, situated on the right bank of the river Okura, Kaurinui by name, bounded on one side by the above named river, on another by a creek named Huruhuru, on another by the ridge Paparaurau, and on the other by land named Waipapa, being a line from Paparaurau to the river Okura.
Provided that the land be outside the government boundaries.
Consideration — 10 blankets, 2 coats, 2 pairs trowsers, 4 canisters powder, 4 fowling pieces, cash, £10.
Case No. 68 — Pre-emption certificate, No. 90
James Harris and A. J. Hatfield.
800 acres. Eight hundred acres of land situated at the head of the Waitemata, called Whatiwhati, being bounded by the river, the Kaipara road, and a line from that to the river, running through the centre of a timbered gully to the river as above mentioned.
Case No. 69 — Pre-emption certificate, No. 190
H. J. Hatfield.
800 acres. Eight hundred acres of land situated at the head of the Waitemata, at a place called Whatiwhati, being bounded by the Kaipara road on the south, on the west and north by Maori land, and on the east by land belonging to Harris and Hatfield.
Case No. 70 — Pre-emption certificate, No. 191
James Harris.
800 acres. Eight hundred acres of land situated near the head of the Waitemata, bounded on one side by a path leading to Kaipara, on another side by land applied for by Mr. Hatfield, at the back by land of Blake and M’Donald, and on the other side by Maori land.
Alleged to have been purchased from the native chiefs Tautari, Waihe, Pumipi, Hone Ngawhanga.
Consideration — 10 blankets, 100 lbs. tobacco, 2 gowns, 6 shirts, 2 coats, 2 guns, 1 box, 3 cartouch boxes, 1 cask powder, £10 cash.
Case No. 71 — Pre-emption certificate, No. 202
Thomas Russell, carpenter, Auckland.
1000 acres. One thousand acres of land situated on a small fresh water creek at the head of the Waitemata, and bounded on one side by land belonging to Mr. John Moore, on two other sides by Mr. John Fair, and on the other side by the natives.
Alleged to have been purchased from the native chiefs, Tamati, Reweti, Taipari, Tautari.
Consideration — £32, paid in goods.
Case No. 72 — Pre-emption certificate, No. 173
William Hay.
990 acres. Nine hundred and ninety acres of land situated near the source of the Manukau, bounded on one side by a creek or swamp named Mangapikopiko, on another by a place named Mangapu, on another by land belonging to the chief Te Rau, named Tanatahi, and on the other by a line from Mangapu, nearly parallel to a place called Poponui.
Alleged to have been purchased from the natives.

Consideration of a claim for land has been disallowed, and publication of such disallowance for general information directed, as there were native witnesses, but the claimant declined to prosecute.
