Mr. Moore withdrew the motion of which he had given previous notice, for the further consideration of the memorial of Kenneth Mathieson, ship builder, of Wellington.
Mr. Moore then brought forward the Memorial of the Committee of the Port Nicholson Mechanics’ Institute, and moved, seconded by Mr. Hickson, that a sum, not exceeding £100, be placed on the estimates for the ensuing year in aid of the building fund of this Institution.
Debate ensued.

On the motion of Mr. Seymour a “Bill to provide against the occupation of land or premises by persons without title,” was read and ordered to be printed.
Mr. Hickson gave notice that on Tuesday next, May 29th, he should move “that Council do go into Committee on Road Bill.”
The Colonial Treasurer moved “that Council do now go into Committee on Estimates.”
“that the Council do now adjourn to tomorrow, at two o’clock.”
Amendment put and carried, and Council adjourned at a quarter to six, p.m., to Tuesday, the 29th day of May, at two o’clock.

Present—
His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor and all the members, excepting the Hon. the Senior Military Officer, the Hon. Colonial Treasurer, the Hon. Dillon Bell, and W. O. Cautley.
The Council met pursuant to adjournment.
The minutes of the last meeting read and confirmed.
Mr. Hickson having waved the order of precedence, moved “that this Council do go into Committee on Estimates.”
Motion carried and Council in Committee.
The Colonial Secretary, in the absence of the Colonial Treasurer, moved that the sum of £82 be allowed for Public Works Department.
Motion seconded by the Attorney-General.
Mr. Hickson moved as an amendment, seconded by Mr. Moore, “that the said sum be struck off.”
Amendment put and negatived, and original motion agreed to.
The Colonial Secretary moved, seconded by Mr. Moore, “that the sum of £822: 7: 6 be allowed for the Customs Department.”
Mr. Hickson moved as an amendment, seconded by Mr. Hunter, “that the salary of the Locker be raised from £80 to £100 per annum.”

The Colonial Secretary moved, seconded by the Attorney General, “that the sum of £619: 10 be allowed for Medical Department.”
Debate ensued.
Motion agreed to.
On the motion of the Colonial Secretary, seconded by the Attorney General, the sum of £206: 11: 6 was allowed for Supreme Court Department.
On the motion of the Colonial Secretary, the sum of £185 was allowed for Registrar General’s Department.
The Colonial Secretary moved that the sum of £140 be allowed for Attorney General’s Department.
Debate ensued.
Mr. Hickson moved as an amendment, seconded by Mr. Moore, “that the sum of £120 be struck off.”
