JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS
IN THE
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
WELLINGTON, MONDAY, MAY 28, 1849.
Present—
His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor
and all the Members, excepting the Hon.
Dillon Bell, and W. O. Cautley.
The Council met pursuant to adjournment.
The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed.
Dr. Greenwood presented a petition from Jonas Woodward, Congregational Minister, of Wellington, "praying the honorable Council to exclude from the Estimates all and every sum, or sums of money, intended as payment of any spiritual persons, or for any religious or educational purpose whatsoever."
Petition read and laid on the table.
The Attorney-General moved, and Colonel M’Cleverty seconded, the second reading of the Constabulary Force Bill.
Mr. Hickson moved as an amendment seconded by Mr. Ludlam,
That the Council do now proceed with the Estimates in Committee.
Amendment put and negatived.
Original motion put and carried, and Bill read a second time accordingly.
The Attorney-General gave notice that on Monday next, the 4th day of June, he should move that Council do go into Committee on this Bill.
The Colonial Treasurer, agreeable to notice, moved the further consideration of his Address to His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor on the subject of education.
On the motion of Dr. Greenwood, seconded by Dr. Monro, a select Committee appointed to consider the question. The Committee to consist of:
The Hon. the Colonial Secretary
The Attorney General
The Colonial Treasurer
D. Monro
J. Danforth Greenwood
George Hunter, and
Henry Seymour.
