On the motion of the Colonial Secretary the sum of £556 : 7 : 6 was allowed for Sheriff’s Department.

On the motion of the Colonial Secretary, the sum of £30 was allowed for Coroner’s Department.

The Colonial Secretary moved that the sum of £362 : 7 : 6 be allowed for the Post Office Department.

Mr. Hickson moved as an amendment "that the Clerk of Post Office at Wellington have his salary raised from £140 to £200 per annum."

Amendment agreed to, when

Dr. Greenwood moved, seconded by Mr. Seymour,

That in recommending an addition of £60 to the salary of the chief clerk of the Post Office, no further addition is requisite for the public service of that department; and that in case a head of that department is required, long service and efficiency constitute a preferable claim for promotion.

Resolution adopted.

Original motion, with the £60 added thereto, put and carried.

The Colonial Secretary moved that the sum of £2273 : 1 : 3 be allowed for Police Department.

Mr. Ludlam moved as an amendment, seconded by Dr. Monro, "that the sum of £406 : 1 : 3 be disallowed."

Mr. Ludlam moved as an amendment, "that the item under these heads—Native Presents, Entertainment of Native Chiefs, and Charitable Aid, be expunged."

Mr. Moore, seconded by Dr. Monro, moved as amendment, "that the sum of £150 be allowed for these items," when

The Colonial Secretary moved that the Committee do adjourn until Thursday next, at two o’clock.

Motion of adjournment put and carried, and the Committee adjourned at twenty minutes to seven o’clock, p.m.

The Council met pursuant to adjournment.

The minutes of the last meeting read and confirmed.

Mr. Hickson having waived the order of precedence, moved "That Council in Committee do now proceed with the Estimates."

Motion agreed to, and consideration of Miscellaneous Estimates clause resumed.
