Superintendent's Office,
Nelson, 22nd January, 1868.

MR. THOMAS JONES is hereby
authorised, under the provisions of
Section XIII, of "The Goldfields Act, 1866,"
to construct a bridge, suitable for dray
traffic, across the Orowaiti river, near its
mouth, and to occupy a sufficient portion of
the Government Reserve on the banks of
the river for the approaches of the bridge,
and an additional area of 33 feet by 66 feet,
at one end of the bridge for a toll-house; and
to charge, for a period of five years, from
the 1st January, 1868, tolls as per Schedule,
on the following conditions :—

  1. That the bridge shall be at all times kept in good
    repair and capable of safely bearing loaded drays.
  2. That Constables, Mail Carriers, Overseers of
    Roads, and all other Government officers on
    duty, may use the bridge free of charge.
  3. That the Government shall have the right at any
    time to purchase the bridge, at a valuation, or
    to build another alongside it; the valuation, if
    the bridge be purchased, to be conducted on
    the basis of the estimated value of the actual
    structure of the bridge at the time of purchase,
    without reference to first cost.
  4. That this Grant shall not be transferred without
    the sanction of the Goldfields Commissioner,
    or other person appointed by the Superinten-
    dent.

If the above conditions are strictly com-
plied with, the proprietor of the bridge shall
have the sole right of ferrying on or bridging
the Orowaiti river, for a distance of one
mile on each side of the bridge, for the above-
mentioned period, except against any tram-
way or railway bridge.

MR. CHARLES NEES is hereby
authorised, under the provisions of
Section XIII of "The Goldfields Act, 1866,"
to construct a tramway, commencing at the
Nile Steam Sawmills, to the eastward of the
piece of land held for the tollhouse by the
proprietors of the Nile Bridge, and termi-
nating at the back of the Camp Reserve,
Charleston; and Mr. Nees is hereby pro-
tected for a period of five years, from the
27th May, 1867, in the occupation of half an
acre of land for a Station, &c., adjoining the
land held by the proprietors of the Nile
Bridge at one end of the line, and of a strip
of one chain by five chains at the back of the
Camp Reserve at the other end, and of a
width of twenty feet along the course of the
line, which is about forty chains in length :—

  1. This Protection shall not interfere with any
    existing right or privilege, and shall not
    prejudice the right of the Government to grant
    protection to any other railway or tramway.
  2. The Protection shall not be transferred without
    the sanction of the Commissioner, or other
    Officer in charge of the Goldfields.
  3. If any portion of the ground, over which the
    tramway passes, shall prove to be payably
    auriferous, any person can work it on first
    providing an equally good tramway, or paying
    compensation, at a valuation, to the proprietor
    of the tramway, and obtaining the sanction of
    the Warden of the district.

MR. MALCOLM STEVENSON is
hereby authorised, under the pro-
visions of Section XIII of "The Goldfields
Act, 1866," to construct a track, about six
miles in length, from the Orowaiti Lagoon
to the Caledonian Terrace, and to charge,
for a period of six months, from the 1st
January, 1868, a toll of five shillings for
each loaded horse, two shillings for each
head of large cattle, and sixpence for each
sheep or pig, and to occupy twenty feet
wide of ground along the course of the track,
on the following conditions :—

  1. That the track shall be at all times maintained
    in a good state of repair.
  2. That any other person at any time on payment
    of a proportionate share of the expense of the
    construction of the track at a valuation, may
    become a part proprietor of the track.
  3. That this protection shall not prejudice the
    right of the Government to cut any other
    track, or to grant protection for any other
    track for the first three miles from the Orowaiti,
    without compensation, but if the track or any
    part of it for the remainder of the distance,
    be taken by the Government, compensation
    will be paid at a valuation:
  4. That all Government Officers on duty may use
    the track free of charge.
  5. That this grant shall not be transferred without
    the sanction of the Commissioner, or other
    officer in charge of the Goldfields.
