They will be required to devote one hour a day, for four days a week, out of school hours, to the instruction of the pupil-teacher or pupil-teachers in the subjects, and to train them in the art of teaching, in and out of school hours.

They will be required to certify, according to a form annexed, that such time has been devoted, and such instruction and training given; and the certificate to this effect will require to be forwarded by the Chairman of the School Committee.

No grant on account of either the salary of a pupil-teacher, or the instruction fee of the principal teacher, will be paid without such certificate.

The pupil-teacher's salary will not be paid unless the principal teacher can certify to the faithful and diligent discharge of the duties of such pupil-teacher.

The programme for the instruction of pupil-teachers is annexed.

REMUNERATION.

Scale of Payment of Pupil-teachers.

First year ... Males, £20 ... Females, £16.
Second year ... Males, £30 ... Females, £24.
Third year ... Males, £40 ... Females, £32.
Fourth year ... Males, £50 ... Females, £40.

The augmentation in the above scale is conditional upon the satisfactory progress of the pupil-teacher.

Scale of Payment of Principal Teachers for the Instruction

and Teaching of Pupil-teachers.

For one pupil-teacher, £10 per annum.
For two pupil-teachers, £18 "
For three " £24 "
For four " £28 "
For five " £30 "

Form for Certifying that Pupil-teacher has been instructed according to Regulations.

I, ........................., teacher of the ......................... School, certify that I have instructed ......................... pupil-teacher of the ......................... School for one hour a day for four days of each school week during the Quarter ending .........................

PROGRAMME OF ATTAINMENTS REQUIRED FROM PUPIL-TEACHERS.

FIRST YEAR.

For Candidates :—
Bible—A general acquaintance with principal persons and events.
Reading—The easy narratives of the Dublin Third Book, or its equivalent.
Spelling—Of the same passages.
Writing—In a fair, bold hand, simple extracts, or from dictation.
Arithmetic—The Simple and Compound Rules and Reduction.
Grammar—To point out the parts of speech in a simple sentence.
Geography—An outline knowledge of New Zealand and the Continents—of course, also, of geographical definitions.
History—An outline knowledge of English History.
For Girls :—Plain Sewing.
