Carriages to be Numbered.
- On every Hackney Carriage or Borough Stage Carriage the Owner thereof shall cause to be painted, in a legible manner, on a tin plate, of one inch in length, white on black ground, the words “Borough of Timaru,” and the Number of its Licence; such tin plate to be securely affixed on the side of such Licensed Hackney Carriage or Borough Stage Carriage.
When Carriages may be used.
- Every Hackney Carriage or Borough Stage Carriage may be used for the purposes for which it is Licensed, at any time and during any hours, day or night.
No. of Passengers to be carried.
- Every Hackney Carriage or Borough Stage Carriage shall be allowed to carry one passenger for every (18) eighteen inches in width of seating-room, provided such seating-room, to be computed exclusively of the Driver’s seat, and the number of persons to be kept painted on the tin plate on the side.
Lamps.
- Every Hackney Carriage or Borough Stage Carriage, when plying for hire, shall each evening, at and after sunset, carry and sufficiently display two lighted Lamps—one on each side of the splash-board.
Inspection.
- The Council shall, as often as they deem necessary, cause an inspection to be made of all Licensed Carriages, and of the Horses and Harness used in drawing the same; and no Owner, Driver, or Conductor of any such Carriage shall obstruct such inspection. And if at any time any Carriage, Harness, or Horses shall appear to the Council to be insufficient or unfit for public use, the Council may cause notice (in writing, in the form or to the effect contained in Schedule E of this Regulation) to be served on the Owner of such Carriage, Harness, or Horses either personally or by delivery at his registered place of abode; after which service, such Owner shall not use, let, or hire such Carriage until the same, or the Horses or Harness used in drawing the same, shall be sufficient for public use.
Suspension of Licences.
Passed by the said Council this Eleventh day of September, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-one.

SCHEDULE A.
A REQUISITION FOR A HACKNEY CARRIAGE OR BOROUGH STAGE CARRIAGE LICENCE.
To the Mayor and Councillors of the Borough of Timaru.
I, ____ residing in ____ do hereby request that a Licence may be granted to me to keep, use, employ, and let a Hackney Carriage to ply for hire within the said Borough, and within a distance of five miles from the Post-office.

I, ____ residing in ____ do hereby request that a Licence may be granted me as a Driver (or Conductor) of a Hackney Carriage, to ply for hire within the Borough of Timaru, and within the distance of five miles from the Post-office.
Dated this ____ day of ____ 18__.
Note.—It is necessary that the applicant shall produce satisfactory certificates of good conduct, and his ability to drive, if a Driver.
We, the undersigned, ____ do hereby certify that the applicant ____ residing in ____ is a person of good fame, and thoroughly competent to act as a ____.
