EFFICIENCY OF SCHOOLS.

The efficiency of the Schools under the inspection of the Board has been maintained during the past year. The Quarterly Returns have been supplied by the Local Authorities with greater punctuality, and have been compiled with greater care than during previous years.

The attempt, mentioned in the Board’s Report of 1867-8, to introduce a system of Military Drill into the Schools has been but partially successful, as owing to the withdrawal of nearly all the drill instructors by the General Government, the Schools have been thrown almost entirely on their own resources. A few of the Teachers have, however, been able to drill their pupils, and a more particular notice of the favourable results produced in such cases will be found in the Inspector’s Reports annexed.

The Board, considering that it would add to the efficiency of District Schools if a record were preserved of any suggestions that might occur to the persons authorized to visit them, has distributed Visitor’s Books for the insertion of any general or special remarks, and of the number of children present at the time of the visit.

Eighteen Candidates for Mastership have been examined. Of these nine obtained Certificates qualifying them for the special appointments they were desirous of obtaining; three were passed as competent for the management of small Country Schools, and two for that of Ordinary Schools.

Books, maps, and apparatus have been disposed out of the Educational Depot to the value of £269 16s. 7d.

The Board has, according to its usual practice, expended a small sum of money in the distribution of prizes to the most deserving of the Scholars attending the Ordinary Schools. The names of the children to whom these prizes have been awarded will be found in the Appendix.

HENEY JOHN TANCRED,
Chairman.

31st March, 1869.
