SUMMARY REPORT OF INSPECTOR OF SCHOOLS.


To THE Hon. H. J. TANCRED, CHAIRMAN.

SIR,—I have the honour, in obedience to your instructions, to submit a Tabular Summary of the Quarterly Returns as to attendance and payment, and a Schedule as to the efficiency of the Schools examined.

It will be seen, from the Tabular Summary that during the quarter the number of attendants has been 2645, an increase of 205 upon the corresponding quarter of 1867. The average daily attendance has been 1692, an increase of 116. The amount of School Fees £813 4s. 5s. an increase of £54 15s. 8d.

The attendance and progress of the Country Schools have been hindered by the floods, the harvest, and general depression.

It will be seen from the Schedule as to efficiency that the number of Schools examined has been 36, including 1481 children, and that the progress has been on the whole satisfactory, after allowing for the drawbacks above-mentioned.
