SCHOLARSHIPS.

The examination of Candidates for the six Government Scholarships of 1868 took place in the month of June.

Seven boys competed for the Open Scholarships, two of whom were being educated at Christ’s College Grammar School, one at the Christchurch High School, one at the Ashley Bank School, and two at Mr. Scott’s School.

For the Scholarships open only to boys attending District Schools aided by the Board, forty competitors offered themselves as Candidates, viz:—

Eight from St. Michael’s School.
Five from St. Luke’s School.
Seven from the Wesleyan School, Christchurch.
Four from Rangiora Boys’ School.
Three from Kaiapoi Church School.
Three from Riccarton School.
Two from Papanui Church School.
One from Papanui Wesleyan School.
One from Halswell School.
One from Prebbleton School.
Two from Oxford School.
One from St. Albans School.
One from Ashley Bank School.
One from Heathcote Valley School.

Five of these were disqualified on account of their names having been sent in after the date specified by the Board; seventeen others were not considered by the Board to have passed the preliminary examination in such a manner as to justify any further competition on their part. The Candidates for the Junior Scholarships were thus reduced to eighteen.

In the final examination the two Open Scholarships were awarded to—

  1. William Hartland, Christ’s College Grammar School.
  2. Louis Gibson, Christ’s College Grammar School.

William Dixon, Ashley Bank School, although unacquainted with Ancient History or Latin stood next in the order of merit, as tested by the number of marks obtained. The Board to mark their approval of the manner in which he passed the examination awarded to him a prize of books.

The four Junior Scholarships were awarded to—

  1. Alfred Dawson, Prebbleton School.
  2. Alfred Morton, Rangiora Boys’ School.
  3. A. J. Parson, Wesleyan School, Christchurch.
  4. Walter S. Bean, Kaiapoi Church School.

The Board also awarded prizes of books to Alfred Brake, Halswell School, and William Honey, Kaiapoi Church School.

In September it was found desirable that Alfred Dawson, a Junior Scholar of 1868, and R. Triggs, C. E. Jennings, and H. A. Ladbrooke, should be advanced to Schools where they would receive a class of instruction superior to that obtainable in District Schools. At the desire of his parents Dawson was removed to the High School, Christchurch; the parents of Triggs and Jennings chose the Christ’s College Grammar School, as the school at which their sons should for the future be educated. H. A. Ladbrooke resigned his scholarship after a tenure of about fourteen months. One of the Junior Scholarships also having been resigned last year, two vacancies are created, and the Board proposes in June of the present year to fill these up and add two new Scholarships, thus raising the total number of Scholarships to twenty.
