School Inspection Reports

Saltwater Creek School May 5th ... Present 13 ... Attendance reduced and still interrupted by loss of Bridge; the Master ferries children over every morning and evening. Attainments improving.

Leithfield School ... May 5 ... Present 18 ... Improving.

North Road School ... May 7 ... Present 14 ... New Teacher.

Timaru School ... May 12 & 14 ... Present 72 ... Much improved.

Waimate ... May 13 ... Present 26 ... The attendance has fallen off. It is probable that this is owing to dissatisfaction on the part of the parents. The Master and his family set an example of unpunctual attendance; they were not all in the room until a quarter to ten, although the School bell is rung at half-past eight; in this and in other respects the Master is more disposed to give way to, than to control irregularity. The children are clean and orderly, but dull and slow. The room disorderly, as to the misplacement of some of the desks; the cupboard and its shelves, as to the books and papers. The teaching has either been neglected or badly done, for the children seem to have made little, if any, progress in reading, spelling, and arithmetic. The copy books are not bad, but would be better if the Master had gone about among the children when they were writing. The blackboard seems to have been only used for setting sums, but not for explanation. The Bible knowledge, better than the other subjects, is probably for the most part attributable to the Sunday School. The Teacher’s own children are almost alone in any creditable attainment, but they are considerably behind similar children in other schools. Better results could be produced by an ordinary Schoolmistress.

Geraldine School ... May 15 ... Present 15 ... Improving.

Arowhenna School ... May 15 ... Present 16 ... The attendance has been much reduced by the loss of the Temuka Bridge. The fees also reduce the attendance; there is also great difficulty in obtaining the fees. The School does not seem to be valued in the district. The School hours are irregularly observed, both from my own observation at different times and from reliable report. There is a want of better local supervision and control. The Chairman of the Committee lives at a distance, the Master is Secretary, and the other Committeemen do not interfere. The School-room and the children are very clean and orderly. The class of attendants, the numbers and the standard of attainment, are reduced to what could be easily conducted and effected by an ordinary Schoolmistress.

St. Andrew’s School }
Christchurch } May 20 ... Present 44 ... Satisfactory.

Arrangements were made for the examination of two Candidates for Masterships. One declined examination from his insufficient Bible Knowledge. One re-examined, still spelled so badly as to be ineligible.

Further details are entered in the Journal.

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your obedient servant,

J. P. RESTELL,

Inspector of Schools.
