SPECIAL REPORT ON CANDIDATES FOR JUNIOR SCHOLARSHIPS,

ACCORDING TO RESULT OF THEIR PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION.

Forty Candidates have offered to compete for these Scholarships.

They are from the following Ordinary Schools:—

Christchurch St. Michael’s ... Eight Candidates.
Christchurch Wesleyan ... Seven
Christchurch St. Luke’s ... Five
Rangiora School ... Four
Kaiapoi Church School ... Three
Riccarton School ... Three
Papanui St. Paul’s ... Two
Papanui Wesleyan ... One
Halswell School ... One
Prebbleton School ... One
Oxford ... Two
St. Albans ... One
Ashley Bank ... One
Heathcote Valley ... One

The papers from Kaiapoi, Rangiora, Halswell and Prebbleton Schools, reflect credit upon the Candidates, and upon their several Schools and Teachers. The others are, mostly, very inferior; and the boys sent up, being the best of their age from their several Schools, a very meagre standard of attainment is indicated by them. There has been a great disregard to punctuation, the correction of errors, and to the manner of holding pens.

William Dixon, of the Ashley Bank School, offers himself as a Candidate for an open Scholarship. He has, however, no knowledge of either Latin, Greek, Ancient (profane) History, or Algebra; his Arithmetic, Mensuration, Geometry and writing are very creditable; his spelling very faulty.
