School Inspection Reports

xxxvii.

Rangiora Girls’ School, November 11 ... Present, 43 ... The School is now conducted in the new building, a fine, lofty and airy room, well lighted and ventilated. The chimney, an architectural design, is too large, massive, and heavy for the rest of the structure. The few and old desks are insufficient and unsuitable. The improved organization, discipline, and tone of the School, give fair promise of satisfactory results.

Ashley Bank School, ... November 12 ... Present, 16 ... Satisfactory.

Leithfield School, ... Same day ... Present, 25 ... Improving.

Saltwater Creek, ... November 13 ... Present, 20 ... Improving.

Woodend School, ... Same day ... Present, 38 ... (Below the average, owing to a local holiday). Improving.

Papanui Church School, ... November 18 ... Present, 70 ... (Below the average, owing to two previous days’ rain). Satisfactory.

St. Michael’s School, Christchurch, ... November 19 ... Present, 90 ... (Below the average, as above). Satisfactory.

Chch. Wesleyan School, ... November 19 ... Present, 93 ... (Below the average as above). Satisfactory.

Lyttelton Church School, ... November 24 ... Present, 51 ... The clock at a standstill, the wet floor, the half-dusted desks and table, the listless irreverence at prayers, all told of imperfect organization and defective discipline. The clock was out of repair; the floor had just been swept and watered, but the water stood in long pools on the floor, and the elder boys knelt in it. Crouching behind the desks their misconduct seems to pass unnoticed. Two elder boys thus hidden, talked nearly all prayer-time. The others lolled at ease, or sprawled in various attitudes of repose. I had no intention of watching for irreverence, but the talking aroused attention to it. The very slow and lame progress of the lower classes, in elementary knowledge, is in striking contrast with the greater accuracy of younger children at a neighbouring School. [Lyttelton Wesleyan, as explained to the Board on November 26.] The dullness is not, therefore, due to the locality, but to the spiritless and mechanical routine of this particular School. In the higher classes, the reading, writing, and arithmetic are inferior to the standard of similar schools. Another Town School, St. Andrews, Christchurch, of nearly equal numbers but with inferior appliances, is more successfully conducted in its elementary course by a single Teacher, a Mistress.

This is the Third, consecutive time, that it has been my duty to report unfavourably on the Lyttelton Church School.

Papanui Wesleyan School, November 25 ... Present, 41 ... The order and the progress of the lower classes is much improved. The upper classes are imperfect in Bible knowledge, very deficient in arithmetic, and incorrect in diction. The School is a very elementary one; and only fit for boys under 10 or 11 years of age and for little girls.

One Candidate for a certificate has been examined, as per Special Report of the 23rd instant.

Details of the School examinations are entered in the Journal.

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your obedient servant,

J. P. RESTELL,

Inspector of Schools.
