✨ School Inspection Reports
XXXVI.
These are not adapted to one another as to height; and the benches being fitted into
the wall, both, bring the children nearer to the cracks in the woodwork;
and also prevent
the convenient supervision of the writing.
There are three good desks of about 7½ feet each, in length. This is scarcely half
enough.
There is a fair supply of apparatus, including maps, easels, boards, &c. Maps of
Australia and New Zealand would be an acquisition, when obtainable.
The arrangement of the children on all sides of the room is very disadvantageous, and
not at all conducive to order.
Considering all these drawbacks, the conduct and attainments of the children are
creditable to the Mistress.
I have the honour to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of Schools.
BOARD OF EDUCATION.
(OCTOBER 30—NOVEMBER 26, 1868)
INSPECTOR’S SUMMARY REPORT FOR THE MONTH.
To THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD.
Sir,—I have the honour to submit a Summary Report on the Schools examined during
the month.
The examinations have been without notice.
Heathcote Valley, ... October 30 ... Present, 38 ... Much Improved; children in good order and making satisfactory progress. Attendance increasing.
North Road, ... November 2 ... Present, 21 ... Improving.
Courtney, ... November 4 ... Present, 22 ... Very satisfactory.
South Selwyn, ... November 5 ... Present, 16 ... Not more than an
average; but six of this number came late, arriving after 10 o’clock. The Teacher
did not arrive till a quarter before ten; thus setting the example of irregularity.
The classes are badly arranged, and the room is untidy. The reading and writing
are not being carefully taught; mistakes are becoming confirmed for want of
correction; the copybooks, except Charles Withall’s, are untidy and discreditable. They are not well chosen; and the graduations are ill adapted to respective
ability.
Leeston School, ... Same day ... Present, 20 ... Very satisfactory.
Prebbleton School, ... November 6 ... (Below average) ... Improving.
(Very wet day.)
