REMARKS.

CHRISTCHURCH.

The month of May opened with nine days of very fine pleasant weather, bright and clear, except on the 1st and 5th, which were overcast. Heavy rain and hail fell on the 10th and on the forenoon of the 11th, with a very cold wind from S.W. From the 18th to the 20th cloudless weather prevailed; the days calm and warm, with occasional frosty nights. From the 21st to the close of the month the weather was very changeable; in general cloudy and damp, with frequent showers of rain. The month throughout was exceedingly calm, nothing approaching to a high wind occurred; the mean daily velocity, 103 miles, is 19 miles below the lowest.
