THE following correspondence is published for general information.
J. WILLIAMSON,
Superintendent.
Superintendent’s Office,
Auckland 25th February, 1858.
SIR,—The disclosures which have recently been made in the Auckland Provincial Council relative to the late City Council render it necessary in justice to all those who were connected with the latter as well as for the satisfaction of the public, that a strict inquiry should be instituted into the affairs of the City Council.
As it is desirable that the gentleman to whom the conduct of such inquiry is entrusted should be one whose character would command the public confidence, and who is unconnected with any political party in this Province, I have to request that, if not incompatible with his public duty, the Auditor General, Dr. Knight, might be instructed to examine and report upon the Accounts of the officers of the late City Council and also of the Harbour Commissioners.
I have &c., &c.
(Signed) J. WILLIAMSON,
Superintendent.
The Honorable
The Colonial Secretary.
Colonial Secretary’s Office,
Auckland Feb. 27th, 1858.
SIR.—With reference to your Honor’s letter of the 25th instant, No. 22, I have the honor to inform you that the Auditor General will examine the Accounts of the late Auckland City Council and Harbour Commissioners if submitted to him for that purpose.
I have &c., &c.,

His Honor

Superintendent’s Office,
Auckland, 22nd March, 1858.
SIR,—I have the honor to hand you herewith, by order of his Honor the Superintendent, all the books and papers connected with the affairs of the late City Council that are in this office. I subjoin a list of them, and will feel obliged by your handing me a receipt for them.
I have also been directed to hand over to you some books, and a great many papers, belonging to the late Harbour Commission. These I shall send to you either now, or when you shall have finished your examination of the City Council accounts, as you may direct.

1 spring file, with papers thereon.
Auckland, August 5th, 1858.
SIR,—I have the honor to report for your Honor’s information, that I have examined the accounts of the Treasurer of the Auckland City Council for the period commencing the 30th of March 1854, and find the sums received amount to £3,692 16s. 6½d., and the disbursements to £3,641 13s. 1½d., and that the balance unaccounted for is £51 3s. 5d.
There are Fees on Licenses issued amounting to £11, and a payment of £1 by Mr. Schultz on the 11th of December 1854, for Market Place allotment No. 3, which cannot be traced among the Treasurer’s receipts.
The documents accompanying the accounts supply no information by which to determine whether the receipts on account of Fire Rates and rents of City Endowments are correct. The proper authorities should require the parties who leased the City Endowments to pay the rents due.
The expenses, with the exception of the Chairman’s salary, were paid, on sufficient authority, up to the 30th of April, 1855, when the Minutes of the proceedings of the Council cease to be inserted in the Minute Book.
