Hospital Report




Committee during the half-year through the resignation of former Members, the customary steps as provided in Rules, were, from time to time, taken to fill these up, and your Committee is now composed of the requisite number, as provided under the Constitution.

The Committee recommend the claims of the Institution on the entire community, and trust to receive liberal support in the half-year ensuing.

The largest number of patients receiving treatment in the Hospital at one time was 56, and the smallest number 36. The mean average has been 45.

The admissions each month into the Hospital are as follows:—July, 36; August, 36; September, 26; October, 36; November, 22; December, 32.

The attendance of out-door patients has been 950, and the number of separate cases treated each month are as follows:—July, 74; August, 95; September, 110; October, 129; November, 116; December, 121.

The following is a list of the patients from each district, male and female separately:—
Hokitika—Males, 42; females, 21. Kanieri—Males, 33; females, 13. Paroa—Males, 9; females, 3. Waimea—Males, 47; females, 5. Totara—Males, 6; females, 1. Okarito—Males, 3; females, 3. Greymouth—Males, 1; females, 1.

Different occupations or trades of the patients:—Miners, 97; laborers, 10; carpenters, 2; gardeners, 2; blacksmiths, 4; seamen, 2; grooms, 3; cook, 1; stockman, 1; sexton, 1; barmaid, 1; general dealer, 1; married (occupied domestically), 41; prister, 1; clerks, 3; packers, 3; bushmen, 4; hawkers, 2; brewer, 1; engine driver, 1; mining advocate, 1; storeman, 1; under age (not 10 years old), 4.

1.—Medical Cases.

Diseases of the Lungs.—Phthisis pulmonalis, 8; double pneumonia, 4; chronic bronchitis, 3; acute pleurisy, 2; asthma, 2.

Diseases of the Heart and Large Blood Vessels.—Hypertrophy of heart with valvular disease, 2; pericarditis, 2; aneurism of innominate artery, 1; aneurism of the descending portion of the arch of the aorta, 2; aneurism of the transverse portion of the arch of the aorta, 1.

Diseases of the Abdomen.—Hepatitis, 3; jaundice from obstruction, 1; hydatid tumour in right lobe of liver, 1; colic, 2; chronic dyspepsia, 3; enlargement of liver, 2; cirrhosis of liver, 1; ascites, 1; obstinate constipation, 2.

Diseases of the Nervous System.—Chronic meningitis (syphilitic), 1; hemiplegia, 4; apoplexy, 3; hysteria, 2; epilepsy, 4.

Diseases of the Kidneys.—Abscess, 1; tuberculosis of both kidneys, 1; haematuria, 1.

Rheumatism, 21 (acute, 8; chronic, 13); syphilitic rheumatism, 2; gonorrheal rheumatism, 5; chronic rheumatic arthritis of hip joints, 2; rheumatic gout, 3; lumbago, 3; sciatica, 3; rheumatic arthritis, right shoulder joint, 1.

Colonial Fever, 4 (hepatic, 2; enteric, 2).
