Hokitika, 2nd August, 1869.

NOTICE is hereby given that Protection has been granted for the period of five years to the punt erected by Messrs Cheffings and Whitten at the Teremakau and Hohonu Junction, under the provisions of "The County of Westland Act, 1868," and subject to the conditions published in the County of Westland Gazette, No. 4, of the 17th January, 1869, and to the following:—

  1. The Punt, gear, and approaches to be maintained in good and serviceable condition to the approval of the County Engineer.

  2. The charges not to exceed the following rates:—

For foot passengers, each 0 0 6
Horses with or without rider or pack, each 0 1 6
Vehicle drawn by one horse (empty) 0 2 0
Each additional horse 0 1 0
Dray loads at per 100 lbs 0 0 3
Sheep, pigs, and goats, each 0 0 3
Cattle by punt, each 0 1 0
" " swimming 0 0 6
  1. All Government Officers travelling on public service, members of the Police Force, and prisoners in charge, and horses or vehicles used by them to be conveyed free of charge.

Double the charges above mentioned may be made between the hours of 10 o’clock, p.m., and 6 o’clock, a.m.

N.B.—All timber within the limits of half a mile on either side of the Punt, and within one chain from the river’s edge, is to be left standing.

CONRAD HOOS, Chairman of the County Council of the County of Westland, do hereby notify that I have granted protection to Messrs Kilgour and Perotti, under the regulations made by the County Council, and published in the County of Westland Gazette, No. 7, of the 24th of March, 1869, for their line of tramway from Greymouth to Saltwater, being a distance of about five miles and eleven chains; and that I have authorised the collection of the tolls at rates not exceeding those specified in the schedule hereto annexed by the said company, for the period of one year from the 1st August, 1869. Provided that the Government may, should it be deemed advisable, construct a road which may cross the tramway or run parallel to the same for a distance of one mile, without being liable to pay compensation to the company. Provided also, that the line of tramway is kept on the ocean side of the Railway Reserve throughout, and is subject, within the town boundary of Greymouth, to the approval of the Borough Council of Greymouth.

The protection to date from 8th July, 1889.

Given under my hand at Hokitika, this fourth day of August, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-nine.

We, the undersigned, Commissioners of the Waste Lands Board of the County of Westland, in accordance with the provisions of section 32 of the Regulations for the Sale, Letting, Occupation, and Management of the Waste Lands of the Crown in the County of Westland, do hereby proclaim that the lands described in the Schedule hereto annexed are open for sale.
