Miscellaneous Notices

neighbourhood of Lake Brunner and the Hohonu River, with a view to ascertaining the possibility of constructing a water-race, to supply water for washing the auriferous terraces near Maori Gully and the surrounding district, and I find that the Big Hohonu is a source from which water for a race can be obtained at the necessary altitude. As to the quantity at the lowest state of the river, it would be about 100 heads; this would possibly diminish, by leakage, to 80 heads when delivered where required. The length of the race I estimate at 10 miles, and the cost £2,000 per mile. I may add that the miners have proved the highest parts of the terraces at the head of the New River and Maori Gully to be very rich, if water were available for washing; many making a living by working only during the continuance of heavy rain.

I have only at present roughly gone over the ground, to ascertain the practicability of the work, as the cost of properly laying out the line for the race would be considerable; and until the scheme shall be taken up by a company in earnest, it would only be throwing away labour to do so.

I have, &c.,
JAMES ROCHFORT,
County Engineer.
