  1. The owner of every hackney carriage or Borough stage carriage, before plying for hire with the same, shall cause the number of the carriage to be legibly painted on a tin plate with white letters on a black ground, and the figures and letters of the numbers shall not be less than two inches in length, and of a breadth in proper proportion to the length thereof, and on such plate shall also cause to be legibly painted in similar letters of one inch in length the words “City of Wellington,” and such tin plate shall be securely affixed on some conspicuous part of the exterior of the carriage, as may be directed.

  2. Every hackney carriage or Borough stage carriage may be used for the purpose for which it is licensed at any time and during any hours, day or night.

  3. Every hackney carriage or Borough stage carriage shall be allowed to carry one passenger for every eighteen inches in width of seating room provided, such seating room to be computed exclusively of the driver’s seat; and the numbers of the persons which may be carried by any such carriage shall be kept painted on the tin plate above mentioned in the manner hereinbefore directed.

  4. The owner of every hackney carriage and Borough stage carriage shall put up and at all times keep distinctly painted or marked on the inside of the front of any such carriage a table showing the amount of the fares which may be legally demanded and taken from the hirer of such carriage.

Standings

Such number of licensed hackney carriages or Borough stage carriages as is hereinafter directed may stand and ply for hire at the following places, and no other.

The carriages shall be so drawn up on the several stands that the horses heads shall be distant ten feet from any street crossing.

Carriages shall be drawn up in the order in which they arrive at a stand, and shall carry fares in the same order, unless expressly requested by a passenger to proceed without regard to such order.

On Custom House Quay, in front of the Custom House.

In Grey street, alongside the kerbing near Odd Fellows’ Hall.

In the road, Lambton Quay, between Brandon and Johnston streets.

On Thorndon Quay, arranged alongside the kerbing near Public Works Department.

In Pipitea street, alongside the Metropolitan Hotel.

In Molesworth street, at junction with Murphy street, near Princess Hotel.

In Tinakori road, opposite St. Mary street.

In Willis street, alongside kerbing near Presbyterian Church.

In Manners street, opposite the Market yard.

In Courtenay Place, near the Pound.

In Abel Smith street alongside Victoria Hotel.

No extra charge shall be made for luggage, provided it does not exceed 14lbs. per person by Borough stage carriage, and 28lbs. per person by hackney carriage.

Fares on public holidays and on Sabbath days to be the same as ordinary days.

The rates or fares to be paid for hackney carriages taken from any stand, or for Borough stage carriages, shall be as follows:

By Time.

Carriage drawn by one horse—

For the first hour ... 4 0
For the second hour ... 2 0
Every subsequent fifteen minutes or part of fifteen minutes ... 0 9

Carriage drawn by two horses—

For the first hour ... 5 0
For the second hour ... 3 0
Every subsequent fifteen minutes or part of fifteen minutes ... 1 0

By Distance.

For licensed hackney carriage drawn by one horse—

Half-mile, or any less distance ... 1 0
Mile, or any less distance more than half-mile ... 1 6
For every additional half-mile, or fractional part of half a mile over a mile ... 0 6

Any person calling or sending for any licensed carriage and not further employing same, exclusive of detention ... 1 0
Detention for every fifteen minutes after the first five minutes ... 0 6
Half fare allowed back if distance exceeds two miles, provided the fare is not by time.

For licensed hackney carriage drawn by more than one horse—

Half a mile, or any less distance ... 1 6
Mile, or any less distance more than half-mile ... 2 0
