Licensing Regulations




For each licence for any boat plying for hire there shall be paid to the Town Clerk the sum of £1 1s annually; and every such licence shall be available only until the next general licensing day, which shall be on the first day of October in each year or on the first day thereafter upon which such licences can be granted.

For each licence for any boatman of any licensed boat there shall be paid to the Town Clerk the sum of one shilling annually, and every such licence shall be available only until the next general licensing day.

Table of Fares.

To and from any vessel in the inner anchorage or to the westward of a line drawn from Pipitea Point to Jerningham Point, single fare 0 1 0
To or from any vessel in the outer anchorage or to the westward of a line drawn from Kaiwarra stream to Halswell Point, single fare 0 2 0
From the Queen’s Wharf or Griddle Iron to the Baths, or the reverse, single fare 0 1 0
Any other part of the harbor as per agreement.

Fares by Time.

For the first hour ... 0 3 0
Every subsequent half-hour ... 0 1 6

When the boat is engaged by time, if the hirer requires it the licensee shall charge half fare for every additional passenger after the first.

Each boat licensed to carry passengers shall carry twenty pounds of luggage (if required) with every passenger without extra charge and the sum to be paid for all luggage beyond the weight above stated shall be at the rate of one passenger fare for every one hundred and fifty pounds weight of luggage so carried, one passenger must be deducted from the number which such boat is licensed to carry.

Waterman’s Signal.

A ball will be exhibited on a staff in some conspicuous place near the usual landing to signify when bad weather fares may be charged, as per regulations.

When the danger signal is hoisted, double fares may be charged.

Double fares to be chargeable between the hours of eight o’clock p.m. and seven o’clock a.m.


No. 13.

Regulations made under the authority of Section 95, Sub-division 5, Part 10, of Schedule 13, of said Act, “For appointing the several sums to be paid for licenses by hawkers, regulations of their names, regulating their conduct.”

For each license to trade within the City of Wellington as a Hawker there shall be paid to the Town Clerk the sum of £4 annually, and every such license shall be available only until the next general licensing day.

Licenses may also be issued under the hand of the Town Clerk for shorter periods, as follows:

Hawkers at per quarter ... 1 0 0
Hawkers at per month ... 0 10 0


No. 15.

Regulations made under the authority of Section 95, Sub-division 5, Part 10, of Schedule 15, of said Act, “For appointing the sum to be paid for a porters license, and the rates and fares to be taken by licensed porters.”

For each license to ply in the City of Wellington there shall be paid to the Town Clerk the sum of ten shillings annually, and every such license shall be available only until the next general licensing day.

Table of Fares by distance.

For any distance not exceeding half a mile ... 0 0 6
Exceeding half a mile but not exceeding one mile ... 0 1 0
Every additional half-mile ... 0 0 3

By Time.

For the first and second half-hour per half hour ... 0 1 0
Every subsequent half-hour ... 0 0 6
At per day of eight hours ... 0 10 0


The foregoing Regulations were passed by the City Council of Wellington at a meeting of the Council held on Wednesday, the 10th day of July, 1872, and confirmed by the said Council at a meeting held on Friday, the 9th day of August, 1872.
