General Rules to be observed in Firing for the Provincial Government Rifle Prizes, 1868, in the Wellington Province.

1st. The firing for the Provincial Government Prizes will take place in the several Districts of the Province at such times and places as the Officers Commanding Districts may appoint between Monday, the 6th April, and Saturday, the 9th May, 1868, and should the weather prove unfavourable at the time appointed, the firing may be postponed at the discretion of the officer in charge of the firing party, provided the firing of each company is completed on or before the latter date.

2nd. All persons enrolled in the Militia, Armed Constabulary, and Volunteer Corps in the Wellington Province are eligible to compete for these prizes.

3rd. The Rifles, Breech Loading Carbines, and Ammunition issued by Government alone are to be used. Persons using the Breech Loading Carbine will be allowed one mark at the first range, two at the second range, and three at the third range.

4th. The minimum pull of the trigger to be six pounds, and the Senior Officer on the ground may direct the examination of the arms used by the competitors at any time before, during, or after the firing, and should any arm have been tampered with, or the pull of the trigger found to be below the minimum, the competitor using such arm will be disqualified, and his score disallowed.

5th. The firing to be superintended by a Staff Officer.

6th. The Ranges will be 300, 400, and 500 yards, five shots at each range, and one trial shot allowed at each range. At the 800 yards the position will be standing or kneeling only; and at the 400 and 500 yards any position. The size of the targets will be 6 x 6; Bull's eye two feet; Centre, four feet; Bull's eye and centre square.

7th. For the Breech Loading Carbine Prizes the ranges will be 200 and 300 yards, five shots at each range, and one trial shot at each range allowed. Position, kneeling or standing only. The size of the target will be 6 x 4; Bull's eye, 8 inches, and Centre 2 feet. Bull's eye and centre square.

8th. In the scoring the value of the shots will be, Bull's eye, 4; Centre, 3; Outer, 2.
