Designs for Provincial Government Buildings.

The Provincial Government of Wellington invite Designs for Public Offices, Council Chamber, etc., intended to be erected on Custom House Quay, for which they offer the following Premiums, viz:— For the best Design, £100; for the second best, £50; and for the third best, £25.
The Designs to be sent in to this Office at or before noon of Wednesday, 8th May next.
The general conditions, approximate accommodation required, etc., are printed below. Any further information can be ascertained on application to the Provincial Engineer’s Office.

GENERAL CONDITIONS ON WHICH COMPETITIVE DESIGNS ARE INVITED FOR PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS, WELLINGTON.
The Provincial Government of Wellington, being desirous to make arrangements for the erection of Provincial Government Buildings, has decided to offer Premiums of £100 for the best, £50 for the second best, and £25 for the third best design for the proposed structure.
The Plans and Drawings required from intending competitors are:

Plans of the various floors.

Longitudinal and Transverse sections through the principal parts of the Building and Council Chamber.

Elevations of the several fronts.

Perspective drawing of the whole as supposed to be seen from the Harbour.
All the Plans and drawings to be drawn to a scale of (say) four feet to an inch — each set of Plans, etc., to be accompanied by an approximate estimate showing the total amount of the different descriptions of materials and labor.
The cost not to exceed eight thousand pounds.
Each set of drawings to have a motto, and the name of the Architect enclosed in a sealed envelope marked on the outside with the same motto, which envelope will not be opened before the Prizes have been adjudicated. The Prize designs to become the property of the Government. All other designs will be returned at the expiration of one month.
The site may be regarded as level and four feet above the highest spring tide. The ground is newly made for a depth of 11 feet.
The chief approaches will be from Custom House Quay. The buildings will be surrounded by streets. The principal elevation to face the Harbour.
The Provincial Council Hall and Offices and the Public Offices to be respectively distinct, although not necessarily detached.
The block of land set aside for the proposed building has 170 feet frontage with a depth of 195 feet.
The accommodation required is stated in the Schedule appended hereto. The dimensions are understood to be approximate.
