PUBLIC NOTICE.
To the Inhabitants of the Province of Wellington.
THE Magistrates of the Province of Wellington, in Meeting assembled,
feel it their duty to caution all persons within the Province against
spreading reports, using language, or doing acts which are likely to
create unnecessary alarm, and especially such as are apt to alarm or
irritate the Natives.
Although some of the Natives at Taranaki are now in arms against
the authority of the Queen, the Magistrates feel convinced that the
great mass of the Natives are most friendly in their disposition both
towards the Government and their European fellow subjects, and a
very heavy responsibility will rest upon all those persons who, by
foolish threats, or boasts, or other imprudent conduct, attempt at a
time like the present to disturb or annoy them.
The Magistrates therefore call upon all well disposed persons to
discountenance such conduct by every means in their power: And
they hereby give notice that all persons who shall be proved to have
done acts, or used language calculated to excite the Natives to a
breach of the peace, will be dealt with according to law.

o tenei whawhai, na te maori, ko te kohuru. E mea ana hoki ahau e
whakakino katoa koutou ki tenei mahi, rite tonu me matou e whakakino
ana. Mokonei hoki, ka whakakinoainga ai nga tangata o Wi Kingi, mo to
ratou pokenga i te toto o nga pakeha ata noho; ka tau te riri o te Atua ki
runga o te kai kohuru, me ta te kupu o Kenehi IV, 10. "E tangi mai
ana te reo o te toto a tou teina ki au i roto i te whenua." Aianei ano, ka
