Provincial Secretary's Office,
Wellington, October 30, 1856.

HIS HONOR THE SUPERINTENDENT has directed the publication of the following Report for general information.

WILLIAM FITZHERBERT,
Provincial Secretary.

Wellington, 16th September, 1856.

SIR,—Having completed the survey of the Township of Featherston, I beg to offer you the following remarks on its situation, soil, &c.

The Town is beautifully situated on the western side of the Valley of Wairarapa, close to the mouth of the Valley of Otawira, and is distant from Wellington about 39 miles. It covers an area of 385 acres, which has been divided into sections varying in extent from a quarter of an acre to an acre.

The Otawira forms the southern boundary of the Town: it is a clear and beautiful mountain stream, affording an abundant and never failing supply of water.

To the westward of the Town the hills rise rapidly; they are spurs of the Rimutaka range, and are covered with timber of various kinds.

To the eastward lie the Plains of the Tauherenikau; these for the most part consist of open land, covered with grass, flax, fern, &c.; but there are several patches of bush containing valuable timber.

The soil in the Town is much better than I expected to find it. Merely looking to the surface, it appears to be stony; but on digging the holes for the section posts, of which there are about 600, and none less than two feet deep, we found that the stones were on the surface only, the soil below being a good clay loam, almost entirely free from stones.
