HIS HONOR THE SUPERINTENDENT has been pleased to direct the publication of the following extract from Mr. Hughes’ report upon the line of road between Greytown and Masterton for general information,
By His Honor’s command,
William Fitzherbert,
Provincial Secretary.
Masterton, March 6th, 1855.
Sir,—
I forward by Mr. Masters the plan of the line of Road from Greytown to Masterton which I am glad to inform you passes a great portion of the way through land of an excellent description, and can be made at a very trifling expense,—there are only about 20 chains immediately after crossing the Waiohini of a swampy nature, this portion will require drains, and raising three feet above the level of the adjoining land; the metalling is close at hand in the river bed, so that it will probably not be the most expensive part of the line,—the portion through the three-mile Bush is all good ground and free of swamp, and the remaining distance to Masterton is nearly all a good natural road.
I am, &c., &c., &c.,
(Signed) John Hughes.
