said standard weights and measures have to be forwarded to the Colonial Secretary, at Wellington, every fifth year to be adjusted and returned, which takes about a month.

Gaol, New Plymouth,
2nd January, 1872.

Sir,—I have the honor to forward the usual Report on the condition, &c., of the Gaol, for the half-year ending the 31st December, 1871; and also the half-yearly Return of clothing and necessaries, in my charge, for the same period.


REPORT.

  1. The greatest number of prisoners, at any one period in the Gaol during the last six months, was 10.

  2. The average number of Prisoners during the last six months was 8.4-184.

  3. Health of prisoners good; medical assistance required at different times for four prisoners—cases respectively, cold in eyes, ulcerated leg, diabetes, epileptic fit.

  4. The conduct of prisoners good.

  5. Much trouble caused by the contractor, and, rations supplied, not very good.

  6. Labour: Prisoners were employed at the Hospital Reserve and Gaol Reserve.

  7. The improvements required in last Report not yet completed.—I have, &c.,

Report of Harbour Master for 1871.

New Plymouth, April 11, 1872.

Sir,—I have the honor to inform you that the business transacted by me during the year 1871, is as follows:—Answering all letters received from the Marine Board; seeing the Signal Station is kept in proper working order; attending to the request of the out-posts in sending the necessary supplies of paint, rope, bunting, &c.; sent cargo boat to Waitara, and one to Opunake,—and one seven-oared whale-boat to Waitara; went to Waitara in charge of the ‘Rangitira,’ ‘Go-ahead,’ and ‘Bonnie Lass,’ on their first trip; went with cargo boat in tow of the ‘Phoebe’ to the wreck of the s.s. ‘Airedale;’ transported mails, passengers, and furniture to the ‘Phoebe;’ worked at the wreck ten days; went to Urenui to conduct the ketch ‘Woodquest’ in and up the river; went on board the brig ‘Lady Denison,’ and remained while the Master went on shore and returned; boarded the schooner ‘Onward’—put in for shelter; sent the lifeboat off on two occasions, viz., 1st June, and 5th September; put new moorings out for perch buoy; and shifted buoys on three occasions for cleaning and painting; superintended the landing and shipping of 354 boat loads of cargo—about 1,770 tons.
