provision against accident from this cause will require to be carefully made.
Referring to the plan and section of the river, it will be seen that the timber is directed against the right bank, just above the site of the bridge, where there is a high bluff covered with light bush to the water’s edge, it is then thrown back towards the left bank, and the stream has scoured a channel shewn in the section.
The cost of the bridge and approaches must not exceed £3,000; and this sum must include £450 for the cost of timber now lying at the site.
The designs must be distinguished by a motto, or a mark of some kind; and a letter with this distinguishing mark on the envelope, and endorsed Waitara Bridge, enclosing the name and address of the designer must accompany each design.
The designs must be forwarded to his Honor the Superintendent up to the 7th January, at noon, and will be submitted for decision to J. Blackett, Esq., engineer, and as soon as they are returned to the Superintendent, the letters will be opened, accompanying the design, and the premium paid as awarded.
An estimate of the cost of completely finishing the work must be sent with each design, the probable correctness of which will be considered in awarding a premium, and before a premium will be paid, the designer must furnish the name of a competent person or competent persons who will contract to do the whole of the work for the amount stated in the estimate.
A premium of £20 will be given for the most eligible design.
A specification must be supplied with each design, together with such details as may be required to put the work at once into the hands of a Contractor.
The Provincial Government reserves the right to withhold the premium should the designs not be deemed suitable or deserving a premium.
The design to which the premium is awarded, to become the property of the Government. The others will be returned to the owners with as little delay as possible.
Plans and sections of the River and banks can be seen at the Survey Office.
