THE WAITARA BRIDGE.
Prospectus of a Bridge to be built over the Waitara River, in the Province of Taranaki; and the conditions upon which the premium offered for designs will be awarded.
Provincial Secretary’s Office,
November 7, 1870.
THE superstructure must be constructed chiefly of timber, the Government having provided a quantity of red pine (rimu) and ironwood (puriri), for the purpose. The supports may be iron piles, iron cylinders, or timber piles, as the designer may think fit.
The timber being chiefly in planks or joists, is easily convertible—a schedule of the timber is attached hereto.
Other materials available in the locality are bricks, which can be delivered at from four to five pounds per thousand; and the large boulders on the beach, with which rough walling in random courses, can be done at from 20s. to 25s. per perch of eighteen inches thick.
The River Waitara is accessible by vessels drawing ten feet; and piles, whether of timber or iron, could be delivered nearly at the site of the bridge.
The bed of the river is mud and small boulders, and does not present serious difficulty in driving piles; the river is subject to rapid freshets—the velocity being sometimes five and a-half miles per hour. Large logs of timber from sixty to ninety feet long and averaging thirty in diameter, are brought down by the freshets;
