THE following letter from the Colonial Secretary, is published for general information.

Wellington, 15th Sept., 1862.

SIR,—Should recent orders expected to be issued by the Commissariat put a stop to the Road Works going on under Mr. Carrington, your Honor is authorised to continue the same until you receive a further communication on the subject from the Government. You will oblige me by making the best provisional arrangements in your power to secure economy in the outlay of the money expended, and efficiency in the performance of the work.

The presentation of this letter to the Sub-Treasurer will be sufficient authority for the payment authorised.

WHEN the undermentioned Works are certified by the Engineering Surveyor as completed in accordance with the accepted Tender, the amount certified will be paid.

The tools and barrows belonging to the Government will be handed over if required, the Contractor to pay for any depreciation of the value while in his hands.
