Town Belt, and are available on such terms as you may join with me in determining. From this land I am of opinion an income of from £400 to £500 a-year will be readily obtainable for promoting this purpose. For the buildings necessary a vote on the estimates may be taken for facilitating the immediate prosecution of the object.

The Lieut.-General, and the Colonel Commanding in this Province, have, from motives of consideration calling for our best thanks, determined to permit the employment of some 300 soldiers by the settlers, to retrieve the farms in the neighbourhood from their dilapidated state; this, I fear, very few will be able to avail themselves of, as the farms have for some time ceased to be a source of income, and what means remained to the settlers have been spent in supplementing the Militia pay and rations, which, until the pay was raised a few months' back, was inadequate to maintain the men without their families.

Statements of the financial position of the Province will be laid before you, from which you will perceive that it maintains the character for soundness which it has had under every Provincial Government since its existence as a Province.

TARANAKI SETTLERS' RELIEF FUND.

NOTICE TO CLAIMANTS.

HIS Excellency the Governor having been pleased to appoint a Commissioner to investigate Claims for losses sustained by Settlers at Taranaki, during the late war, with a view to the distribution of the Relief Fund.

Notice is hereby given that the Commissioner will be ready to receive applications from persons claiming to participate in such Relief.

The following Rules must be observed by parties making application. The applicant must state in writing exact particulars of the property destroyed or damaged, in respect of which relief is claimed. The nature of the loss or damage, how arising, so far as is known or can be ascertained, and the true amount or value thereof estimated in money.

The applicant must verify the statement by the usual Statutory Declaration.

In addition to the applicant's declaration, the Commissioner will require corroborative proof.

Applications must be delivered, or sent by post, addressed to the Resident Magistrate, Taranaki.

If from persons resident at Taranaki, within 10 days from this date.

If from persons North of the Province of Canterbury, one Month from this date.

If from persons resident in the Province of Canterbury, or South of that Province, or elsewhere in the Colony, within two Months from this date.

Persons resident in Taranaki must attend before the Commissioner personally.

Non-residents may authorise any other person to attend on their behalf.

Further notice will be given as to the time and place of the Commissioner's sitting, which will commence in about 10 days' time.

TENDERS FOR FIREWOOD.

TENDERS will be received at this office until noon on SATURDAY, the 15th instant, for supplying the Government Offices with 10 cords of sound mixed FIREWOOD, in good condition for burning, and cut into 8 feet lengths. Tenders to state at what price per cord (8 ft. x 4 ft x 4 ft.). The Contractor will deliver the firewood as required with a week's notice at the Government Offices on Mount Eliot, and stack the same.

Tenders to be sealed and endorsed "Tender for Firewood."
