The purchase of the land in the Mangoraka District has at length been completed by the Government, and we may expect will shortly be placed at the disposal of the province. A substantial advantage arising from the purchase has been at once to get rid of a serious source of embroilment amongst the native claimants to the land; and, I have reason to believe, land in other quarters will soon be acquired, to the mutual advantage of both races.

I am glad to inform you that the General Government has commissioned the District Land Purchase Commissioner to explore the country between the Waitara and the Mokau rivers, with a view of connecting Auckland and New Plymouth by a bridle-road.

The expenditure of the year 1858 has been kept within the amount voted by the Council.

The Customs Revenue continues to exhibit a steady increase; and I think I may congratulate you, that though slowly, in consequence of our many difficulties, the province is steadily progressing in wealth and prosperity.
