condition of the population of the Province of New Plymouth shall be taken on the thirtieth day of June in every year commencing with the year 1855.

  1. The Superintendent shall appoint persons to collect the information required by this Ordinance.

  2. The said collectors shall on or before the twenty-third day of June in every year leave at every House within the Districts assigned to them respectively a Return Paper of such nature and form as are herein-after prescribed; and every Householder able to write shall on the thirtieth day of June duly fill up the said Return Paper with true and sufficient statements of the several matters required to be stated therein and subscribe his name at the foot thereof and shall deliver the same so filled up, when called for, to one of the said collectors. Householders unable to write may cause the said Return Paper to be filled up on their behalf by any person they may choose for the purpose.

  3. Every Collector shall as soon after the thirtieth day of June as practicable call at every house in the district assigned to him to collect the Return Papers and he is hereby authorised to put such questions as may be indispensible to the due filling up thereof to any Householder unable to write who shall not previously have procured his Return Paper to be duly filled up on his behalf and the Collector shall thereupon fill up such Return Paper himself with the information so supplied.

  4. The Return papers hereinbefore referred to shall be blank copies of the Form annexed as a schedule to this Ordinance.

  5. It shall be competent for the Superintendent from time to time by Notice published in the Government Gazette of the Province to vary the form of the Return Papers to be left and filled up as aforesaid and the particulars requisite to the stated therein: Provided that the Form of every such Return Paper shall be such as to require for the due filling up thereof all such information as is required to be given by this present Ordinance. Provided also that no such notice as last aforesaid shall be published without the previous approval of the Provincial Council expressed by a Resolution of the said Council.

  6. Every Householder who shall wilfully refuse or without lawful excuse neglect to fill up to the best of his knowledge and belief any Return Paper left at his house for that purpose under the authority of this Ordinance or to sign and deliver the same, or shall wilfully make, sign, or deliver any false Return of any of the matters required to be stated therein, or who shall refuse to answer, or wilfully give a false answer to any questions asked under the authority of this Ordinance shall for every such offence forfeit a sum not exceeding £5 nor less than 20s. to be sued for by any person appointed in that behalf by the Superintendent and not otherwise.

  7. The Superintendent shall as soon as conveniently may be after the taking of the Annual Census forward to the Governor an authentic statement of the information collected.

  8. This Ordinance shall not repeal or interfere with the operation of an Ordinance enacted by the Governor-in-Chief of New Zealand and the Legislative Council thereof in the Eleventh Session of the said Council intituled an Ordinance for taking a Census of the Colony of New Zealand,

NOTICE.

Superintendent’s Office,
New Plymouth, 15th June, 1855.

HEREBY NOTIFY that a Meeting of Holders of New Plymouth Scrip issued by the New Zealand Company under the Agreement of 4th May 1849 will be held at the Crown Lands’ Office New Plymouth on Wednesday the 1st August 1855 at 11 o’clock in the forenoon for resuming the selection of Land in the Hua district.

HEREBY NOTIFY that a Meeting of Holders of New Plymouth Land Certificates issued by the New Zealand Company subsequent to the 4th May 1849 will be held at the Crown Lands’ Office New Plymouth on Wednesday the 1st of August 1855 at 2 o’clock, in the afternoon for the selection of Land in the Hua district.
