Lighthouse Dues and Franking Proclamation




LIGHTHOUSE DUES

THE following Lighthouse Dues for the various Ports in New Zealand are hereby fixed in accordance with the powers vested in the Marine Board by the XXI. Clause of the Marine Board Act, 1863.

Wellington.

Lighthouse rates, fixed January 11th, 1864, for the Port of Wellington, are hereby revoked, and the following fixed in lieu thereof:—From and after the 31st December, 1864, or as soon thereafter as information be received by the collecting officer—1st. Vessels (not steam vessels) from Great Britain, or any port beyond the Australasian Colonies, per register ton, Sixpence. 2nd. All steam vessels, and vessels from the Australasian Colonies, per register ton, Fourpence. 3rd. For every steamer or sailing vessel employed in the coasting trade, per register ton, One Penny.

Nelson.

On and after the 1st January, 1865, or as soon thereafter as instructions may be received by the collecting officer, Lighthouse Dues shall be levied at the Port of Nelson at the following rates—1st. Vessels (not steam vessels) from Great Britain, or any ports beyond the Australasian Colonies, per register ton, Sixpence. 2nd. All steam vessels, and vessels from the Australasian Colonies, per register ton, Fourpence. 3rd. For every steamer or sailing vessel employed in the coasting trade, per register ton, One Penny.

The above dues shall be levied on entering inwards only.

Bluff Harbour, Invercargill, Riverton.

On and after the date of the Lighthouse on Dog Island, Foveaux Straits, being illuminated, notice of which will be given to the collecting officer, Lighthouse Dues shall be levied at the ports of Bluff Harbour, Invercargill, and Riverton, at the following rates—1st. Vessels (not steam vessels) from Great Britain, or any port beyond the Australasian Colonies, per register ton, Sixpence. 2nd. All steam vessels and vessels from the Australasian Colonies, per register ton, Fourpence. 3rd. For every steamer or sailing vessel employed in the coasting trade, per register ton, One Penny.

Dunedin.

On and after the 1st January, 1865, or as soon as the Lighthouse on Tairoa’s Head is illuminated, of which notice will be given to the collecting officer, Lighthouse Dues shall be levied at the Port of Dunedin at the following rates—1st. Vessels (not steam vessels) from Great Britain, or ports beyond the Australasian Colonies, per register ton, Sixpence. 2nd. All steam vessels and vessels from the Australasian Colonies, per register ton, Fourpence. 3rd. For every steamer or sailing vessel employed in the coasting trade, per register ton, One Penny.

N.B. Vessels from beyond the Colony.


By Post of Letters or Packets which shall be solely on the Public Service of the Colony of New Zealand, and shall be so marked on the outside, and also signed with the name of the sender, and addressed to any of the following officers:—

  • His Excellency the Governor of the Colony.
  • The Officer commanding Her Majesty’s Troops in the Colony.
  • The Senior Naval Officer on the New Zealand Station.
  • The Members of the Executive Council of the Colony.

And such officers shall be authorised to frank official Letters and Packets, provided that there be endorsed on any such Letter or Packet the words “On Public Service only,” and that the signature of the Governor, or of such Officer as aforesaid franking the same, shall be subscribed thereto: And I do appoint and declare that this Proclamation shall take effect on and after the first day of February next ensuing.

Given under my hand, at the Government House at Auckland, and issued under the Seal of the Colony of New Zealand, this twenty-ninth day of December, in the year of Our Lord, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty-four.
