SOUTHLAND

PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT

GAZETTE.

Published by Authority.

Vol. 2.] TUESDAY, 23RD AUGUST, 1864. [No. 26.]

Superintendent’s Office,
Southland, 20th August, 1864.

I is hereby notified that I have appointed

John Francis Dunuas, Esq.,
to be a Commissioner of the Waste Land Board of the Province of Southland.

J. A. R. Menzies,
Superintendent.

NOTICE.

TO MASTERS OF VESSELS BOUND TO INVERCARGILL

Masters of vessels are hereby cautioned not to run over the Bar without a pilot, as the channel inside has now become too narrow to round a vessel too in, to come to anchor, and about a mile above the Pilot Station it is almost impassable even at high water.

When practicable, a vessel should be kept so near to Steep Head that any signals (Marryat’s), shown on the Flag-staff there, could be seen on board; and the master is requested to observe particularly any such signals, and be guided by them.

The new channel, made mention of lately in the Invercargill newspapers, has been buoyed, and would at present admit vessels drawing eighteen feet to pass through it with safety, but only in charge of a pilot, and no directions can here be given for sailing through this channel, as it can only be of temporary duration, but it is hoped that it will continue available until the proper channel opens out, the changes towards which are daily observable.

J. B. Gracie,
Harbour Master.

Harbour Master’s Office,
Invercargill, 18th August, 1864.

Superintendent’s Office,
Southland, 17th August, 1864.

I HEREBY authorise the following member of the Southland Constabulary, to sue and recover penalties under the “Dog Nuisance Ordinance, 1862.”

Sergeant William Connell,
Campbelltown.

J. A. R. Menzies,
Superintendent.
