Twaite-Stream... Deep drains have been cut on both sides, commencing at Clyde-street, and terminating at the Jetty. The soil therefrom in most places has been used to make up the cross section; gravel and fascines have since been laid on. A small thoroughfare leading from Clyde-street to the beach has been ditched, formed, gravelled, fascined, and one culvert constructed.

Deep-stream... All timber and rocks have been cleared; ditches cut on both sides, portions of which have been covered in; a cost of gravel has been spread on the road, and fascines laid on. The same plan has been adopted on top of the covered drains. The whole of the culverts have been lengthened to the full width of the road. A contract is now in progress to kerb and form footpaths on both sides.

Seaward Bush, in continuation of Twaite-Stream... Eight culverts have been laid down, with approaches thereto.

METAL (BROKEN AND UNBROKEN).

A contract has been set for 10,000 yards of metal, about one-tenth of which has been delivered.

WAITUNA CREEK, NEAR SEAWARD BUSH.

A bridge of three bays, twelve feet each, terminating on piers, has been constructed, and approaches made good with sound soil from the terraces.

GREAT NORTH ROAD.

ESTIMATE OF THE COST OF PITCHING AND METALLING THE NORTH ROAD, COMMENCING AT CLYDE STREET, AND ENDING AT THE MAKAREWA BRIDGE.

I think it advisable to cart the materials for the construction of this road between Clyde-street and the Waihopai River, and from thence to convey the same by tramway.

Clyde-street to the Waihopai River

  • Carting 2387 cubic yards pitchers ... £1117 3 2
  • Carting 2118 cubic yards metal
  • Filling and discharging 2387 cubic yards pitchers
  • Setting 2387 cubic yards pitchers
  • Filling, discharging, and spreading 2118 cubic yards metal
  • Re-formation of road (122 chains), including culverts, etc.

Pitching and Metalling Road from the Waihopai River to the Makarewa Flat

  • Constructing tramway, 88 chains
  • Hauling 1200 cubic yards pitchers
  • Hauling 9718 cubic yards metal
  • Filling and discharging 1200 cubic yards pitchers
  • Setting 1200 cubic yards pitchers
  • Filling, discharging, and spreading 9702 cubic yards metal ... £4708 4 0
  • Re-formation of road, 886 chains

If the road is pitched and metalled over the Makarewa Flat, I estimate the cost to be as follows:

  • Constructing 82 chains tramway
  • Hauling 1604 cubic yards pitchers
  • Hauling 1424 cubic yards metal
  • Filling and discharging 1604 cubic yards pitchers
  • Setting 1604 cubic yards pitchers
  • Filling, discharging, and spreading 1424 cubic yards metal
  • Re-formation of the road, including culverts and ditching, 82 chains ... £3474 4 0

If this portion of the road be gravelled with material taken from the river, I estimate the cost to be:

  • Twenty-nine cubic yards of gravel, per chain x 82 = 2378 cubic yards
  • Getting and screening 2378 cubic yards gravel
  • Carting and spreading 2378 cubic yards ... £1684 9 0
  • Re-formation of road, including culverts and drains, 82 chains
