โจ Ferry Establishment and Fares
PROCLAMATION
By Matthew Scott, Esquire, Deputy Superintendent of the Province of Southland.
WHEREAS by an Ordinance passed by the Superintendent and Provincial Council of the Province of Southland, in the twenty-fifth year of the reign of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, and in the second Session of the said Provincial Council, intituled "An Ordinance to establish and regulate Bridges and Ferries," it is among other things enacted that "it shall be lawful for the Superintendent to authorise Ferries to be established at convenient places on the rivers, lakes, or other waters within the Province of Southland, for the conveyance of passengers, animals, and goods across the same; and every Ferry shall be a Public Ferry within the meaning of this Ordinance which shall be proclaimed to be such by the Superintendent by notification in the Provincial Government Gazette:" And whereas the Ferry hereinafter mentioned has been for some time past in use, and whereas it is expedient to establish the same under the said recited Ordinance: Now, therefore, I, the said Deputy Superintendent, in pursuance of the powers vested in the Superintendent by the said recited Ordinance, do hereby authorise a Ferry to be established on the Oreti River, about one mile above the Waikivi Junction, known by the name of the Oreti Ferry; and I do hereby proclaim and declare that the said Ferry so authorised to be established as aforesaid shall be a Public Ferry within the meaning of the said recited Ordinance, and shall be called the Oreti Ferry.
Given under my hand, and issued under the Public Seal of the Province of Southland, at the Government Offices, Southland, this twelfth day of August, in the year of Our Lord One thousand eight hundred and sixty-two.

NOTICE
MATAURA FERRY
By virtue of the powers vested in the Superintendent by the "Ferries Ordinance, 1862," I, the Deputy Superintendent of the Province of Southland, with the advice and consent of the Executive Council, do hereby give notice that the authorised fares chargeable at the Mataura Ferry for persons, animals, carriages, and goods conveyed across the same, are the following, viz.:
From Sunrise to one hour after Sunset:

| Sheep, Goat, or Hog, when under 20 | 0 2 |

| Do do loaded | 3 6 |
| Goods, per cwt. | 0 6 |
From one hour after Sunset till Sunrise the above fares and freights, and one half more, shall be charged.
Further, I hereby give notice that the Mail, and persons exhibiting a Certificate under the hand of the Superintendent that they are on duty under the employment of the Government, are exempt from the payment of said fares and freights.
Owners of Sheep crossing this Ferry are hereby required to give assistance at the following rate, viz.:
For any number of Sheep not exceeding 200, one man; above 200 and not exceeding 700, two men; above 700, and not exceeding 1500, 3 men. When the number exceeds 1500, either party may employ extra labour, not in any case to exceed 2s. 6d. daily borne by the owner of the sheep and the Lessee of the Ferry. In every instance the Lessee shall provide labourers, one of whom may be the Lessee themselves.
Owners of Horned Cattle and Horses do give assistance at the following rates:
When over 10 in number, two men; 60 and under 150, three men; 150 upwards, four men.
