PORTRAIT OF CAPTAIN COOK.

The following letters are published for general information :-

Dunedin, 12th January, 1876.

His Honor James Macandrew, Esq., Superintendent of Otago.

DEAR SIR,—With your kind permission, I do myself the pleasure to present to your Honor, on behalf of the Province, a portrait of Captain Cook, which I got painted on purpose when I was in London last year.

The original of this picture was painted by Nathaniel Dance, R.A., a rather celebrated London artist of the last century, for Sir Joseph Banks, from sittings given by Captain Cook before sailing on his last voyage, and was bequeathed by Sir Joseph Banks to the nation. It is now kept in the Naval Gallery at Greenwich, where I had it copied under special leave from the Lords of the Admiralty and by an artist (Mr. B. S. Marks, of 40, Fitzroy Square), nominated by the Curator of the National Pictures. The copy is an exact reproduction of the original in every respect, and I hope the Province will deem it worthy to be hung in their Historical Gallery.

I am, dear Sir,

Yours truly,

J. RATTRAY.

Superintendent’s Office,

Dunedin, 13th January, 1876.

James Rattray, Esq., Dunedin.

DEAR SIR,—On behalf of the Province of Otago, I have much pleasure in accepting the valuable portrait of Captain Cook—a gift which reflects credit alike on your generosity and good taste, and which I feel assured will be highly prized by the people to whom it has been presented. The probability is that there is no other such portrait of the great navigator in the Southern hemisphere.

I propose to place the picture, together with a record of its history, in the new Otago Museum, now in course of erection, as the place where it will be most accessible to all. In the meantime it will be placed along with the Pilgrim Father of the Province in the Provincial Council Hall. As to this, however, I shall like to be guided by your wishes on the subject.

I have the honor to be,

Yours faithfully,

J. MACANDREW,

Superintendent of Otago.

Dunedin, 13th January, 1876.

His Honor James Macandrew, Esq., Superintendent of Otago.

DEAR SIR,—I am favored with your handsome letter of this date. The destination you propose for the picture is quite satisfactory to me.

I am, dear Sir,

Yours truly,

J. RATTRAY.

PROCLAMATION.

SETTING APART EIGHTEEN HUNDRED ACRES OF LAND IN THE KYEBURN HUNDRED FOR OCCUPATION ON DEFERRED PAYMENTS.

By His Honor James Macandrew, Esquire, Superintendent of the Province of Otago.

And whereas the Provincial Council of the Province of Otago has recommended the Superintendent of the said Province to set apart the lands hereafter specified for alienation on deferred payments :

Now therefore, I, James Macandrew, Superintendent of the Province of Otago, by and with the advice and consent of the Provincial Council as aforesaid, do hereby, by virtue and in exercise of the powers conferred upon me by “The Otago Waste Lands Act, 1872,” and of every or any power in this behalf enabling me, proclaim, declare, and set apart all those sections numbered respectively, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, and 16, block II., Kyeburn Survey District, and the said will be open on the 22nd day of February, 1876, for application for license and lease, on deferred payment.

Given under my hand, and issued under the public seal of the Province of Otago, this 18th day of February, 1876,

JAMES MACANDREW,
