PUBLIC NOTICE.

Under section I. of Regulation IV.

WHEREAS I have received sufficient proof that the portion of the Otago Goldfield, described in the Schedule hereto, is for the whole or the greater part of an inferior character as regards the value of its gold deposits: Now, therefore, I hereby give notice that the same may be occupied by holders of Miners’ Rights in claims of the undermentioned size:—

One (1) acre for each holder of a Miners’ Right, provided that no Block claim shall comprise more than six (6) acres altogether.

Given under my hand at Naseby, this 26th October, 1874.

PROVINCIAL SCHOLARSHIPS.

The following Resolution of the Education Board is published for general information. The time for sending names of intending competitors is extended to the 23rd November, 1874:

"That in consequence of the Government having granted two additional Scholarships, the following modification be made in the Regulations of the 5th ult.:—That one Scholarship for Boys, and one for Girls, be offered for competition next month to the pupils of the three following classes of schools respectively:—1. The ordinary District Schools; 2. The Grammar Schools; and 3. The High Schools; and that in setting the Examination Papers due regard be had to what may be fairly expected from the pupils attending these three classes of Schools."

PROVINCIAL SCHOLARSHIPS.

The following Regulations of the Education Board respecting Provincial Scholarships are published for general information. School teachers are requested to forward to me, before the 15th November, 1874, a list containing the names and ages of intending competitors belonging to their several schools.

REGULATIONS.

  1. Three Scholarships in connection with the Boys’ High School, and three in connection with the Girls’ High School, shall be open for competition on the 21st of December, 1874, to boys and girls respectively who shall have attended the public schools of Otago for at least one quarter during the current year (1874). One of the boys’ and one of the girls’ Scholarships shall be bestowed on a boy and a girl respectively from the High School or the Grammar Schools. Two of the Scholarships shall be conferred on boys and two on girls attending the ordinary District Schools. Competitors must be under sixteen years of age at the date of the competition.

  2. The holders for the time being of the said Scholarships shall be called 'Provincial Scholars,' and shall be entitled to the privileges and advantages hereinafter specified. A scholarship shall be tenable as long as the holder of it remains a pupil of the Boys’ or Girls’ High School, but not longer than three years. The Education Board may extend the period of tenure in the case of any
