NOTICE is hereby given that the land lately opened for sale at Waikoukoi, Glenkenich, being sections numbered 1 to 39, 52 to 65, 65 to 70, 78, 80, and 81, block 3, Glenkenich, is withdrawn from sale.

Also, sections 8 and 11, block 1, Kaitangata District, advertised to be sold at Tokomairiro on the 9th instant, are also withdrawn.

WEDNESDAY, 2nd July, 1873.

Run to be Leased, if no objection.

A memorial having been made by Messrs Fraser and McLean for a pastoral lease of 5000 acres more or less of country situated between the Manapouri and Monowai Lakes, Waiau west, and bounded towards the north by the Manapori Lake, towards the east by the bush and the Hunter Mountains, towards the southward by the bush and the watershed of Monowai Lake, and towards the west by the bush and a range of mountains shown on office maps: Notice is hereby given, that a lease of the said country will be granted to the above applicants unless objections are made to the same before Wednesday, the 2nd day of July next.


FRIDAY, 9th May, noon.

NOTICE is hereby given that section 3 block VI, Clutha District, containing 165a 3r 39p; sections 23, 28 and 33, block VIII, Kaitangata, containing respectively 152a 3r 9p, 93a 2r 3p, and 58a 3r 34p; section 1 of so. block 4, Clarenon District, containing 83a 1r 29p, will be offered for sale by public auction at Mr Capstick's Auction Rooms, Tokomairiro, on Friday, the 9th day of May next, at noon, at the upset price of 10s per acre.

Sections 1 of 2, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, and 17, block I, North Harbour and Blueskin District, containing respectively 39a 1r 20p, 40a, 85a 0r 6p, 78a, 50a 2r 20p, 92a 2r, 79a 1r, 34a, will be offered for sale by auction at the Land Office, Dunedin, on Friday, the 9th day of May next, at noon, at the upset price of 10s per acre.

Immediately thereafter, section 10, block I, Outram, will be offered at the upset price of £2, and subject to valuation for improvements effected thereon.


FRIDAY, 9th May, noon.

NOTICE is hereby given that sections 11 and 12, block IV, Ettrick (Mill Site), containing respectively 1a 0r 30p and 0a 3r 6p, will be offered for sale by public auction on the ground on Friday, the ninth day of May next, 12 o'clock noon; the former at the upset price of £14 5s, the latter at £9 9s.

At the same time, sections 10 and 11 block II, will be offered at the upset price of £5 each, and subject to valuation for improvements thereon.


MONDAY, June 2, 1873, at noon.

RUN for Sale, by public Auction, at the Land Office, Invercargill, the pastoral lease for ten years of Run 395, Southland, Otago, known as the Pahi Run, containing about 6800 acres: Delivery at expiration of present lease, in April, 1874, purchaser to pay one year’s rent in advance. Lease sold subject to right of Governor.


THURSDAY, 22nd May, 1873.—5501 acres.

AGRICULTURAL LAND (CONICAL HILL STATION), WAIPAHEE AND GLENKENICH DISTRICTS, OPEN FOR APPLICATION.

The above land being sections 1x, 2 to 28, block 8, Waipahee District, 4656 acres (from 200 to 800 each section); sections 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, block 10, Glenkenich, and 5, 6, and 7, block 12, Glenkenich, 845 acres (from 80 to 100 acres each section); will be open for application at the Land Office, Invercargill, on Thursday, the 22nd May, 1873, at £1 per acre.

In the event of more than one application being made for the same land on the same day, it will be put up for sale by Auction, open to all bidders.

Applications must be accompanied by a deposit of 2s. for each acre of the land applied for.

TO SCHOOL COMMITTEES AND TEACHERS OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

THE attention of School Committees and public school teachers is directed to the following Regulations of the Education Board—

(Extract from the Minutes of the Education Board.)

The Board having considered those portions of the Inspector’s Report which relate to the school reading books and to Bible reading and religious instruction in schools, resolved that the schoolmasters and others teachers in the public schools be enjoined to adhere strictly to the following Regulations:—

  1. The use of the following mentioned school books shall be discontinued in the public schools of the Province, as soon as a sufficient supply of the books mentioned in Regulation No. 2 can be obtained to replace them, viz.: The “Progressive Lessons” the “Advanced Reader,” and the “History of the British Empire,” published by Messrs W. Collins, Sons and Co.; Coutie’s “Word Expositor” and White’s “History of Great Britain and Ireland.”

  2. The following mentioned books only shall be used as English reading books in the public schools after the first day of April, 1874, viz.:—The Royal School Primer, and Numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the “Royal Readers,” published by Messrs T. Nelson and Sons, the illustrated edition of “My First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Books” published by Messrs W. Collins, Sons, and Co., and Dr Collier’s Histories of the British Empire. But a teacher desirous of introducing any reading book or books in addition to the books above mentioned may obtain permission to do so on satisfying the Board that the use of such book or books in the school is desirable and proper.

  3. The teacher (or the head master, if there be more than one teacher) of every public school shall be at liberty to use in his school such of the reading books and histories specified in Regulation No. 2, and such text books of arithmetic, grammar, geography, and other secular subjects as he shall think most advisable, provided that such text books shall contain no lessons or expressions of a sectarian character.
