3rd year.—Greek (Moral Philosophy,) Natural Philosophy, including (Political Economy.)

SCIENTIFIC COURSE.

1st year.—Latin, Mathematics, Natural Science.
2nd year.—Latin, Mathematics, Natural Science, Mental Science.
3rd year.—Natural Philosophy, Natural Science.

Classes marked * are taught only three days a week. In the Scientific Course students will not be required to attend both the English classes and the Moral Philosophy class, but must take one or the other. Though students are recommended to adhere to one or other of the above courses, if they wish to graduate at the end of three years, the Council desires it to be understood that they are at liberty to take the prescribed classes in any order, and to spread them over a longer period.

SUBJECTS OF EXAMINATION FOR THE B.A. DEGREE.

Latin.—Portions from the works of two verse and two prose authors; selections to be made from year to year from the works of Lucretius, Virgil, Horace, Juvenal, Cicero, Livy and Tacitus. Questions on Grammar, History and Antiquities.

Greek.—Portions from the works of two verse and two prose authors; selections to be made from year to year from the works of Homer, Æschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato, Xenophon. Questions on Grammar, History and Antiquities.

English.—A general knowledge of the structure and history of the English Language and of the principal periods of English Literature, with their representative authors. Portions from the works of the following authors:—Chaucer, Langland, Spenser, Shakespeare, Milton, and Dryden; selections to be made from year to year.

Mental and Moral Science.—1. Logic—deductive and inductive; books recommended—Bain’s logic and Jevons’ logic. 2. Psychology—Lectures on nervous system; books recommended—Carpenter’s physiology; lectures on the special senses and the intellect, including the historical evolution of modern doctrines. 3. Ethics—class lectures and the study of ancient and modern ethical theories; books recommended—Stewart’s outlines and Bain’s mental and moral science. 4. Political Economy; books recommended—Mill’s political economy.

Mathematics.—1. Plane geometry. 2. Algebra. 3. Plane trigonometry. 4. Plane co-ordinate geometry and conic sections.

Natural Philosophy.—1. The elements of statics, dynamics, hydrostatics, and pneumatics, with the solution of problems not requiring the differential or integral calculus. 2. Heat and light as far as explained in the class.

Chemistry and Mineralogy.—1. Chemistry.—The principles of chemical combination and action; the chemistry of the non-metallic elements, of the metals, and of organic compounds; complex qualitative analysis; quantitative analysis of simple salts, and of limestones, silicates, soil, water, coal. 2. Geology and mineralogy: physical geography; dynamical geology; the nature and operations of geological agents; structural geology: rock-masses, their structure and relations, joints, cleavage, metamorphism, faults, unconformability; stratigraphical geology; paleontological geology; characters and distribution of the more important organic remains. Mineralogy: physical and chemical characters and composition of minerals.

SUBJECTS OF EXAMINATION FOR THE M.A. DEGREE.

Attendance on two additional classes—both literary or both scientific. Additional subjects in Latin and Greek: portions from authors not included in the examination for the B.A. degree. Additional subjects in mathematics: elements of differential and integral calculus. Natural philosophy: electricity and magnetism, as far as explained in the class. Astronomy as in Herschel’s Outlines.

Mental and moral science and natural science; the examination more extended than for the B.A. degree.

NOTICE.—Several parties having this week forwarded Advertisements and failed to comply with the rule requiring prepayment, Advertisers in the Gazette are now informed that in all cases the money must be sent, or their Advertisements cannot be inserted. Those now on hand are held over until receipt of payment.

WAIPORI ROAD DISTRICT.—Notice.—Ratepayers within the respective subdivisions of the above district, are requested to pay the amount of their respective rates for the current year, to me, on or before Tuesday, the 25th March, 1873, or legal proceedings will be taken to recover the same.

BLUESKIN ROAD DISTRICT.

Ratepayers are respectfully requested to pay their respective rates to me, at my house Purakanui, as early as possible. For convenience, I shall attend at Mr. Kettle’s store, Port Chalmers, from one to four p.m. on Saturday, March 15; at the Tollhouse, Blueskin, from one to four p.m. on Monday, 17th; and at Schoolhouse, Lower Harbour, from four to five p.m. on Tuesday, 18th.

NOTICE.—A meeting of the above Board to hear objections to the special rate of 9d in the £ will be held in the school-house, Kuri Bush, on Friday, the 21st inst., at 4 o’clock p.m. All objections must be lodged in writing with me on or before 3 o’clock of the same day. The rate roll lies for inspection at the School, Otakia.

NORTH-EAST VALLEY ROAD DISTRICT.—The collector will attend at the N.E. Valley school-house on Saturday, the 8th, and on Thursday, the 20th March, from 2 till 4 p.m., to receive rates and place voters’ names on the roll, as per clause 21, Otago Roads Ordinance, 1871.

IMPOUNDED on the 1st day of March, 1873, by Mr. John Honour, Boundary Creek, near Oamaru—One red cow, white head; one strawberry heifer, branded like D off rump; owner unknown; trespassing in garden and destroying fruit trees, for which 5s. per head damage is claimed, and in default of being released, the above cattle will be sold at the public pound at Oamaru, on Friday, the 28th day of March, 1863, at twelve o’clock noon.

Roberts, Popotunoa, the undermentioned cattle—One red cow, with calf at foot, branded AP on near ribs, bit out of hind part near ear; one red and white cow, like A off rump; one brown and white steer, N off rump; one dark red bull, no visible brand; one brown and white poley steer, NJ off rump; one dark red bull calf, no visible brand; one white steer, no visible brand; one red bull calf, no visible brand; one red and white heifer calf, no visible brand; one brindled bull calf, like U off shoulder; owners unknown, for trespassing on his land at Popotunoa, for which five shillings damages is claimed for bulls, and 2s 6d each for cows, &c.; and in default of being released
